David Michael “Flounder” Truax,57, a lifelong resident of Weirton, passed away at the Weirton Medical Center on November 15, 2021. David was born in Weirton, WV, on May 28, 1964, the youngest of three children born to Charles W. “Bill” and Martha AnnisTruax, Sr. David graduated from Weirton Madonna High School in the Class of 82. In his freshman year at Madonna, the movie Animal House was a box office hit. As a result, the senior Class during initiation week gave Dave the nickname “Flounder.” Dave embraced his nickname and instantly became one of the favorites, most popular kids in the school. After graduation from high school, Flounder made a career as a layout artist at his brother-in-law’s business DePaul Printing. In recent years, Dave had more than his share of health issues originating from diabetes mellitus. A talented and creative writer, Dave was able to keep in touch with his friends and family through social media. As a result, many friends and former classmates would look forward to Flounder’s inspirational posts on Facebook. Dave’s positive attitude continued with him his entire life. His extraordinarily kind and compassionate nature helped cheer up all others that were around him. Like in high school, Dave’s attitude made him the most lovable patient in all of the nursing care facilities where he recently resided. Dave was preceded in death by his father in 1982, his mother in 2008, and his sister. Deborah Cope in 2015. Flounder will be remembered with love by his brother, Charles W. Truax, Jr. of Lowville, NY, his nephew, who he lived with, Alan Cope of Weirton, WV; his classmates from the Weirton Madonna Class of 1982, including Rich Pellegrino, Vince Stonebraker, MD, Mark Kaczmarek, Bill Deerfield, and Mark Varitek; he is also survived by his good friend, Monica Kalonick Osteen and her son, Drew. Dave’s wish was to be cremated. To honor Dave please do an act of kindness or share a positive thought with others. Share tributes at www.grecohertnick.com

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I went to Madonna highschool from Our Lady of Lourdes in Burgettstown and my freshman year, I knew no one. There were complimentary comments about me that would pop up radomly overnight on the black boards at the school. This went on for quite sometime, not knowing who my secret admirer was. Finally a neighbor of Daves let the cat out of the bag, and I found out it was Dave. Dave was a janitor at the school to help pay for his tuition, he would write these things late at night when no one was around. Ever since then I have had a soft spot in my heart for Dave! He was the kindest and most compassionate person I have ever known. When he became ill I made it my quest to help. Even when Dave was in agony he never complained, he’d quietly say or text keep me in your prayers 🙏 He treated my son like his own, he was always there to talk to him if he was sad or had a bad day. I am certain Dave went straight to heaven, but he will be dearly missed by those who knew him. Love you man Monica

  2. I have many memories of Dave however my favorite was a trip today Cedar Point and Rich,Tim and myself talked Dave into riding the Demon drop. He was so nervous and as we told him to count to 3( the ride dropped on 2). He screamed so loud and high pitched that the people waiting to get on were waiting to see the girl getting off the ride but 4 men got off the ride

  3. Sympathy to Bill, Allen and my cousins. This was a beautiful tribute to David. Hadn’t been in touch for many years but never the less still family. He overcame many obstacles but in the end was tired and gave himself to the Lord. May you rest easy in peace my cousin and may perpetual light shine upon you. Donna, Carl and family.

  4. May this tree blossom in the remembrance of Davids life on earth. God Bless You and May you Rest In Peace.

  5. Dave had a beautiful soul and was a great friend. One of life’s joys is making a connection with another person. Befriending and interacting with someone who has the same interests as you and shares many common bonds. I was fortunate to make that connection with Dave from an early age. A shared passion for sports: playing and watching baseball, football, bowling and golf. Avid fans of the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins, who exalted in the victories and commiserated in the losses. Enjoying a night of playing cards with friends, shooting pool at Frank’s Bar, re-telling the “Glory Days” stories of our school days and many adventures, and having long discussions of life’s good times and bad, with Dave always seeing the positives, all the while smoking a cigar, late, on a warm summer’s night. I am grateful to have been Dave’s friend and will happily remember his boundless, upbeat outlook on life and the positive impact he had on everyone he met. God Bless you and Rest in Peace, my friend. Rich

  6. Dave and I grew up near each other and were friends from the age of 6. We fished, camped out, rode bikes, played strato-matic, traded baseball cards and probably got into a little trouble here and there. On any given day you could find Dave at one of the neighborhood fields playing football, whiffle ball or whatever game was chosen that day. Dave was liked by all; he would cut the elderly neighbor’s grass and the next minute be helping one of the younger kids learn to hit a baseball. I recall Dave was deeply hurt when his father passed but he said he had to stay strong for his mother, always thinking about others, that was Dave. We didn’t stay in touch much in the later years, but I will never forget the fun times. Rest in peace Dave, you will be missed.
