Evangelia Koukouli

Evangelia Koukouli passed away on Monday October 18th, at the Trinity Medical Center at the age of 91. She was born on June 16, 1913 in Asia Minor. Evangelia was the daughter of the late Archimandrite Dionysios and Anastasia Koukoulis. She was a survivor of both Christian Holocausts committed by the Turks against the Greeks in 1914 and 1922. Evangelia and her family as refugees then made their home in Athens, Greece until a request by her brother, Nick Dionis, brought her to California in 1947. There, along with her brother, she raised her niece Faith Irene Dionis Melto, with whom she resided. Evangelia was preceded in death by three sisters, Julia, Irene, and Helen; four brothers, John, Nick, Panaioti and Kyriako. Although she was never married, and never had any children of her own, Evangelia selflessly gave her love and devotion to her niece, Faith, and her great niece and goddaughter Dionne Nichole Melto until her death. She was a mother and grandmother in everyone’s eyes, and will be honored for the truly great woman that she was. She is survived by her niece, Faith Irene Dionis Melto, her great niece and goddaughter Dionne Nichole Melto, her first cousin Angelo and his wife Ann Koukoulis ; Tony and Pam Makricosta, the son and daughter of her late first cousin Helen Koukoulis Makricosta. Friends may call at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Weirton from 10 AM until time of service at 11AM on Friday October 22. Very Reverend Father Terry Linos will preside. Interment will follow at the Chestnut Ridge Cemetery in Florence, PA. Memorial contributions may be made to the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church or to Athena’s Closet.
