Frances Lewis McCormick, 86, of Weirton, died Sunday, August 4, 2024, surrounded by her daughters.
She was born September 13, 1937, in Campofelice di Roccella, Sicily, a daughter of the late Pietro and Paola Castiglia. She and her father came from Italy to the United States ahead of her family when she was just 17 years old. Landing in Weirton, she made it her home for the last 69 years. Frances knew no strangers and made friends easily. Most recently she worked for her daughter at the Sunset Café full time, only retiring due to Covid fears. She was meticulous and always was well-dressed. Her ministry of faith was to feed everyone, even during Covid.
From her early years of working at the Park Inn in Weirton, to the 100’s of pounds of gnocchi she made for Gio’s Restaurant, she enjoyed cooking and feeding others. She fed her family, friends, neighbors and “customers” on a regular basis and never went anywhere empty-handed with a smile on her face. No one ever left her house hungry. She enjoyed playing cards, playing Bunco with her lady friends and making numerous crocheted blankets over the years. She will be missed by so many, including her lifelong friend Mary Roberts.
She was a Roman Catholic by faith. She was the beloved wife of the late Fred H. Lewis and Ernest H. McCormick; loving mother of Francie (Michael) Reppy, Linda Spanovich, Lucia (Stephen) Nichols; and sister of Sal Castiglia. She is also survived by three grandchildren; Daniel Spanovich, Lisa Reppy and Ashley Spanovich; two great-grandchildren; Mila and Quinn Spanovich; and by nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by three sisters; Lucia Russo, Paulina DiGristina and Maria Arms and two brothers; Rosalino “Tony” Castiglia and Giuseppi Castiglia; and son-in-law, Daniel D. Spanovich.
We want to share a special thank you for the care and love that Mom received from the staff and residents on the Second Floor at the Weirton Geriatric Center. During her stay she shared a special bond with Thomas Ayers, her favorite person.
Family and friends are invited for visitation at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton, WV on Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be a Mass held for Frances at the St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 229 California Avenue, Weirton, WV with Reverend Dennis R. Schuelkens Jr., presiding on Friday, August 9, 2024, at 10 a.m.
