gracie sponaugle

Gracie Madaline Sponaugle, 73, of Weirton, passed away on March 11, 2024, at Weirton Medical Center. She was born on June 11, 1950, in her family’s home in Colliers, WV, and was preceded in death by her father, Earl Spear, her mother, Elizabeth J. Kimble Utt, her stepfather, Everett Utt, her brother, Ernie Spear, and her beloved grandchildren, Jordan Sponaugle and Jonathan Kazienko.

Gracie was a woman of incredible strength, determination, and resilience. She faced challenges head-on, overcoming a broken neck and hip with unwavering determination that inspired all who knew her. Her strong will and stubborn spirit earned her the title of the strongest person her children ever met.

Gracie cherished the time spent with her family, particularly her children and grandchildren, who meant the world to her. She found joy in simple pleasures like suntanning and camping at Tappan Lake, where she created lasting memories. Walking her dog brought her peace and happiness, as did her love for music, with a special fondness for Johnny Cash and Elvis. Gracie was a devoted fan of the Andy Griffith Show and enjoyed watching movies starring Johnny Depp.

She is survived by her two sons, Eric Sponaugle (Tawnya Dennis) and Michael Sponaugle (Jolene), and her daughter, Holly Greaver (Peter). Gracie is also remembered by her brother, Michael Spear, and sister, Theresa Summers. Her legacy lives on through her cherished grandchildren: Markel Sponaugle, Rianna Everhart, Justin Sponaugle (Kim), Dominic Barnes, Dalton Barnes, Layla Kovach, Makaylynn Sponaugle, Micha Sponaugle, Shawn Dennis, Skyler Dennis, Saphira Dennis, Samantha Brown (Xavier), and one great-grandson, David Simakis.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 11 AM until 1 PM at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV. Funeral services will commence at 1 PM, with Rev. Larry Barkley presiding. Following the service, Gracie will be laid to rest at Oak Grove Cemetery, Follansbee, WV.
