It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Robert Mayhew, 82, of Weirton, WV, who passed away on December 30, 2023, at Weirton Medical Center.
Born on Independence Day, July 4, 1941, in New Cumberland, WV, James lived a life marked by dedication, service, and hard work.
James, a proud graduate of New Cumberland High School, went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Army. His commitment and sacrifices during his military service reflected his unwavering patriotism and love for his country.
Following his military service, James built a successful career as a foreman at Weirton Steel, where his diligence, leadership, and work ethic earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues throughout the years. His contributions left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy as a dedicated professional will be remembered by many.
James is survived by his daughter Tonya Mayhew, his two granddaughters, Fiona and Eva Reynolds all of Portland Oregon; and his sister, Virginia Shepherd of Weirton, WV.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Eva Murray Mayhew, a brother Harry Mayhew, and two sisters Goldie Spencer and Margie Kempf. While he leaves behind a void that can never be filled, his memory will be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
In accordance with James’s wishes, private services will be held at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, where he will be laid to rest with military honors, a fitting tribute to his service to the nation. The Greco Hertnick Funeral Home had the privilege of caring for his services and cremation.
