James Yarnell (Jim) Longacre, Jr. died on October 7, 2025, in The Villages, Florida.
Born on January 3, 1927, in Steubenville, Ohio, Jim was the son of James Y. and Margaret Thompson Longacre. With permission of his parents, Jim graduated from Weir High School one semester early so he could enlist in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Jim remained stateside, training for the land invasion of Japan, when the war ended.
Jim attended Kent State University and became a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He transferred to and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1952.
He returned to the Weirton area, becoming a civic leader and working for the Weirton Steel and National Steel Corporations, primarily in Labor Relations. He served the Weirton community in many capacities including chair of the local American Red Cross, board member of the Salvation Army, the Weirton Chamber of Commerce, Exalted Ruler of the Weirton Elks, and served on the board of the Williams Country Club. Jim was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Jim was a proud Eagle Scout, believing that the precepts he learned in Scouting guided him throughout his life.
He was an avid outdoorsman who pursued golf, hunting, fishing, and gun collecting. Jim was the last surviving member of the Blandville Hunting Club.
A lifelong Presbyterian, Jim served various roles, including Deacon, at Cove United Presbyterian Church in Weirton, WV and was a member of North Lake Presbyterian Church in Lady Lake, Florida.
After retirement from National Steel, Jim became the executive director of the Weirton United Way. In 2001, he and his wife, Carolyn, moved to The Villages, Florida, where she survives.
Jim is survived by his children Wm Craig Longacre (Sue), Susan (Gordon) Lane, Carol (Garry) McCraney, and stepson Daniel Riddle (Joyce). Grandchildren are Gordon Lane Jr., Marion Elizabeth (Ryan) Stewart, and Addison Lane; Molly (Ryan) Elpers, Sarah McCraney, John (Kelly) McCraney and Melissa Tompkins; Jamie (Hayden) Clarke; Danielle (Johnny) Peterson and DJ (Audrey) Riddle. Jim’s legacy includes twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Longacre Cameron.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his oldest son, James Y. Longacre III, who died in a tragic accident while a student at the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1971.
The family will host a Celebration of Life on Sunday, October 12, 2025, 1:00 pm-4:00 pm at 1240 Niles Court, The Villages, Florida.
Interment will be at Island Creek Cemetery, Toronto, Ohio at a later date.
