jon cook

Jon A. Cook, 83, of Weirton, WV, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at WVU Medicine–Weirton.

Born on September 12, 1941, Jon was one of five children of the late Samuel Herbert and Ann M. Smerecansky Cook.

Jon was a proud member of the first graduating class of Weirton Madonna High School in 1959, where he played football for the Blue Dons. After graduation, he joined the workforce alongside his father on the railroad, later working at My Florist, and ultimately retiring from Weirton Steel after 30 years of dedicated service as a laborer.
On March 13, 1976, Jon married the love of his life, Judy Yurko. The two were married at Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church and remained inseparable for nearly five decades. Their love story was one of deep friendship, and unwavering devotion.

Jon had an enduring passion for automobiles that began in his teenage years and remained a defining part of his life. He was the proud owner of many classic cars over the years, but none brought him more joy than his beloved 1957 Chevy and 1968 Oldsmobile 4-4-2. He found great enjoyment in showcasing his cars at local shows and traveling to Columbus, Ohio, to meet with fellow enthusiasts in the “Good-Guys” car club.

A devoted fan of West Virginia University football, Jon held 50-yard-line season tickets for four decades, tailgating with friends and cheering on the Mountaineers every Saturday. He also never missed a chance to root for the Pittsburgh Steelers through their six Super Bowl victories.

However, Jon’s greatest joy in life came from being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was always on the sidelines or in the stands, proudly watching his grandchildren play football, baseball, and volleyball—rarely missing a game.

In addition to his parents, Jon was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Zajac.

He will be remembered with love by his wife, Judy Cook; his son, Jon A. Cook,; his daughter, Traci (John) Ross; his brothers, Rick Cook and Herbie (Bonnie) Cook; his sister, Cathy (Rudy) Nagy; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Private visitation and funeral will be held at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the choice of the donor.
