Steubenville, OH
Resided in:
Weirton, WV
Joseph G. Poszywak, 72 of Weirton, WV, a loving son, brother, uncle and friend passed away unexpectedly on his birthday.
Joey, as he was fondly known, was born on April 4, 1952, in Steubenville, OH, one of six children born to Anthony and Genevieve Sitarz Poszywak.
In his youth, Joe contributed to the community by assisting in the delivery of Spahn’s Milk to residents of Weirton. He was known for his adeptness at small electric repairs and lawn mower maintenance, often lending his expertise to friends and family. Joey found solace in tending to his garden and took pleasure in cutting grass for his friends and family. His passion for gardening was matched only by his love for aviation, a subject in which he was considered a walking encyclopedia.
An active member of Sacred Heart of Mary Church, Joey served as a greeter and usher, embodying the spirit of warmth and hospitality. He, along with his family, was a cornerstone of the church community, actively participating in various church activities and events. Joe’s commitment to his faith extended beyond the church walls; he volunteered his time at the Annual Lenten Fish Fry and took pride in assisting with the preparation for Sunday Mass.
Joey had a remarkable memory, especially for dates, and never missed an opportunity to commemorate birthdays, anniversaries, or other special occasions with thoughtful cards and gestures. Known for his generous spirit and friendly demeanor, Joe formed close bonds with his neighbors, particularly Bill and Gwen, whom he enjoyed spending time with. He had a soft spot for birds and delighted in feeding them, adding a touch of beauty and liveliness to his surroundings. He was a 20 year member of Scout Troop 132, where he achieved a “Wood Badge”. He cherished annual fishing trips to Deep Creek, Maryland, with his brothers and friends from Colliers Way.
Joey was preceded in death by his parents.
Joey will be remembered with love by his three brothers, Anthony and Karen, Leonard and Laurie and Stanley Poszywak two sisters, Bernadette and Terry Kester and Mary Ann and Robert Nieser; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends whose lives he touched with his kindness, generosity, and gentle spirit.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3 to 7 PM with a Rosary recited at 7 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Wednesday at the Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Weirton. Joey will be laid to rest at Saint Paul’s Cemetery in Weirton.

I cannot quite put into words my feelings toward Joe. He was a kind, compassionate, and pure soul. The vestibule before 9:00 AM mass at Sacred Heart of Mary will never be the same nor will our rides together home afterwards. Peace my friend as you soar with the angels.

Joe was my older little brother and always by my side as we were growing up together. He was always a hard worker and we had a special connection whether it was Scouting in Troop 132, or fixing a radio or lawnmower or placing an order for another model to build. Joe, I am so blessed to have had such a gentle soul as a wing man whose unyielding faith mirrored that of our parents and kept me grounded in my own faith through your example of goodness. Joe we all loved you, appreciated how you always included us in your daily prayers and how you spent so many years of your life caring for Mom and Dad as their faithful servant. Love you Joe!

man to Sacred Heart and to everyone’s hearts.
I am a ‘72 graduate of Madonna high school. I remember Joe. Please let me offer my condolences. I am sorry for your loss.
Maryann, I hope the following appropriate. I appreciate this opportunity to share with you.
Many years ago, I participated in Madonna’s production of the Sound of Music. I was 10 years old and proud to be chosen . Everyone was so kind and it was a very happy time for me. I recall a tiny, pretty, little girl, with blonde curls, cast as Greta. That little girl must’ve been you.
I hope you and family are well.
Again, I am so sorry for the loss of your brother.
God be with you.

I am SO sorry for your loss. As you know, I was a classmate of Joe’s at Madonna High School (Class of 1972) and I will always remember how kind he was to me. That being said, I’m not surprised to hear that he touched so many lives over the years and was loved by many. What a beautiful soul!
With deepest sympathy,
Kathy (Barnabei) Ballato
