judith merkel

Judith Merkel, 79, of Weirton, passed away peacefully in Pittsburgh on September 28.

She was a caring mother, grandmother, friend, and neighbor known for her dry humor, sharp memory, and willingness to lend a hand to anyone, as well as her excellent cooking, baking, and sewing.

Judith graduated from East Liverpool High School and West Virginia Northern Community College, where she earned an associate’s degree in allied health and became a Registered Nurse. Licensed to practice nursing in West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, she worked for Weirton Medical Center briefly before starting a 20-year career with Trinity Home Health. She was praised by patients and their families for her high-quality, attentive nursing care.

Judith loved animals, from house pets to the wildlife in her side yard. Besides her beautiful Siamese cats, she adored many pets of her friends, neighbors, and patients. Please consider a donation to the Hancock County Animal Shelter in her memory.

She was preceded in death by her husband Andrew Merkel, parents Glenn and Kathryn Tice, brother Finley Tice, and sister Glenda Tice.

She is survived by her daughter Tonia Teresh, son James Merkel, and granddaughter Alexis Dawgiello.

Judith’s request for cremation will be honored. Per her wishes, there will be no funeral services.

She will be cremated at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home Crematory, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Judith’s memory to the Hancock County Animal Shelter, 715 Gas Valley Road, New Cumberland, WV. 26047.
