Kathryn Marie Melto, 84, of Weirton passed away peacefully on January 22, 2024, at Pam Specialty Hospital in Pittsburgh surrounded by the love of her large family (as well as nurses and staff whom she won over with her usual humor, warmth, and grace).

Kathryn was born June 23, 1939, a loving daughter to Kathryn (Silongi) Barron and Stephen F. Barron.

Kind, caring, compassionate, and jocular, Kathryn was a beloved storyteller who enjoyed sharing stories about raising her seven children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the multitude of kids from her neighborhood who called her “Mom.” She brought stories to life with warmth and humor. She enjoyed watching old movies with her husband Joe and family, solving crossword puzzles, and every aspect of music. She could hear a song once and play it beautifully on the piano. Her enchanting singing voice and musical talents not only won her contests and entertained many but also brought comfort to others.

Kathryn was passionate about games and sports and the communities that brought these worlds together –from boxing matches and bingo halls to baseball fields and the racetrack. She even had a favorite jockey … the one who won.

Her warmth and people-loving nature extended her work life as well. At the Weirton Geriatric Center, she cared for residents as a certified nurse’s aide. At the Red Bull Restaurant and Best Western Hotel, she worked as a welcoming hostess. She also served and comforted developmentally challenged residents at Greenbriar Manor, many of whom, of course, called her “Mom.”

In addition to her parents, Kathryn was preceded in death by her brother Joseph Barron, Jr., son Roy Dean Hinchee; nephew Joseph Barron, Jr.; grandson Josh Grieve; and granddaughter Stephanie Hinchee.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband of 58 years Joseph Melto, Sr., her brother Caiden Barron of Miami, Florida, and her children Steve (Valerie) Hinchee of Cape Coral, Florida; Kathy (Rich) Graham of Mifflintown, Pennsylvania; Linda (Dave) Grieve of Weirton; Joseph Melto, Jr. of Weirton; Jody (Chuck) Melto of Washington, DC; John (Erika) Melto of Bartow, Florida; and Joseph “J.J.” Melto of Weirton and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Kathryn’s wish for cremation has been honored.

She will be cremated at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home Crematory, 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV.

A celebration of Kathryn’s life will be held in Weirton at the convenience of the family.
