Margaret had been a resident of Weirton for many years, for a time joining her husband as proprietors of the Old Oak Inn. Margaret was born on May 5, 1900, on the Island of Pag, Austria-Hungary, now Croatia. She came to the United States at the age of 9 years old. She was one of 10 children. In 1917, she married the late Martin Karavanic, also of Pag, and their union began a wonderful marriage which lasted 78 years. Margaret and Martin had three children: Peter Karavanic and Pearl Krnaich of Weirton, and Violet Pandak, deceased. They had eight grandchildren: Martin Krnaich Slavich of California; Kris Dunlap of Ohio; Thomas and Charles Karavanic of Weirton; Sharon, Michael, and Hilary Pandak and Valerie Pandak-Anderson of Virginia. They also had 11 great-grandchildren. Margaret was devoted to her family and friends. She was an excellent cook, made delicious breads and pastries, and produced beautiful crocheted needlework. She had traveled frequently in the United States, and also returned to Croatia to visit family. With her husband Martin, she provided inspiration, advice, strength, entertainment, and boundless love and affection to those who were fortunate to know her. On their 75th Wedding Anniversary, the Weirton City Council recognized Martin and Margaret with a resolution that stated: “…A happy marriage is a foundation of civilized society; Martin and Margaret’s marriage exemplifies the highest ideals of a loving family…” Margaret was a lifetime member of Lodge 595 of the Croatian Fraternal Union and in earlier years had been active in national and lodge activities.
