Marian Shirley Macaluso, 87, of Weirton, peacefully and unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024.
Born on October 7, 1936, in Burgettstown, PA, she was one of five children born to Guilio and Delia Carnali Bernola.
A graduate of Follansbee High School, Class of 1955, she earned the title of the best dancer in her class.
After high school, Marian embarked on a career at WSTV in Steubenville, where she crossed paths with Michael “Mickey” Macaluso, an Air Force Veteran working in radio and television sales. Their love story unfolded, leading to a marriage that was based on love of family. Sadly, Mickey passed away from cancer on August 28, 2015.
Marian’s professional journey included roles at Weirton Steel and assisting Dr. John and Dr. Tranto. However, she became widely known in the community as “Gram” for owning and operating a children’s daycare in her home, leaving a lasting impact on all the children and their parents, who were fortunate to experience her kind and gentle nature.
Marian found joy in simple pleasures. She enjoyed watching Hallmark Movies and playing cards with friends. Yet, her greatest joy was found in her family. Marian adored her children, their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Marian’s deep love for family was the cornerstone of her life. Her dedication to her family not only defined her character but also left an enduring legacy that continues today between her children and their families.
A Christian mother, Marian nourished her faith as a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, where her faith played a central role in her life.
In addition to her parents, and her husband, Marian was preceded in death by her sisters Joann Bernola and Bonita Boni, and her loyal, gentle, and spoiled rescue dog Buddy.
Marian is survived by her two sons, Michael S. Macaluso, Jr. (Teresa) and Brian Macaluso (Judy); daughters Jennifer Banda (Mark) and Julie Lesho (Jamie); her brother John Bernola (Ann) and sister Kathleen Bernola; grandchildren Erin, Nicholas, and Christian Banda, Marissa and Brandon (Julia) Macaluso, Ross (Cicely) Macaluso, and Alayna (Tyler) Ewusiak ; great-grandchildren Sienna Layne Ewusiak and Lucia June Macaluso and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will gather on Sunday from 1 PM until 5 PM at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, Weirton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 AM Monday at Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church.
Very Rev. Dennis R. Schuelkens, Jr., V.E. will preside,
assisted by Deacon Vince Olenick.
She will be laid to rest with her husband at Saint Paul’s Cemetery.

I am very sad to hear of the passing of Mrs. Macaluso. Mr. and Mrs. Macaluso were precious and pivotal pieces of my early childhood and through my teens. They were great friends with my parents and my siblings. The memories of me hanging out at their house as I harassed Brian and Mike will always be etched in my mind. Great and fun times! Such a sweet family. Mrs. Macaluso comforted me on more than one occasion after my mom‘s passing in 1987. On one particular occasion, while in my early 20s, I swung by her house unannounced to receive advice and counsel from Mrs. Macaluso. Her words and compassion were spectacular. I will hold that conversation, and hundreds of experiences with her entire family, close to my heart till I grow old and gray. You know someone is deeply special when you pass on childhood experiences and memories of them to your children. And so, I have shared my many Maco experiences with my children. – Skins
MARIAN WAS LOVED BY ALL ! MANY FOND MEMORIES WILL LIVE ON IN MY HEART !! REST IN PEACE DEARHEART ! PRAYERS FOR YOUR LOVED ONES !!
Our deepest condolences to Mrs Macaluso’s family and loved ones. She was such a lovely person. So gracious and warm. I hope you find comfort in your many happy memories. Sending love and prayers.
I have known Marian for so many years ever since Julie ( our miracle baby) was born. Years ago I worked along side Marian at her special daycare. She loved those kids like they were her very own. Marian always looked forward to anyone stopping by just to visit or discuss whatever was on your mind! She always talked from her heart. I will miss her GENTLE SPIRIT cause that is why she so special to me!❤️
My condolences to Mrs. Macaluso’s family and loved ones.
Sincere sympathy and prayers to those whom knew and loved her a lifelong friend and classmate. Many great memories that will be her gift to those that knew her.
Mike and all the Macaluso family. We are so saddened by the loss of your mother. We were totally surprised to hear of her passing. She was always one of the nicest women we ever knew and always remember her growing up in the neighborhood with all her children, husband, and Ginger! Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend her services, as I have a fractured knee and can’t walk for at least 3 weeks. Chris and I will say a prayer for all of you, and our love to your family! With love Sam and Chris.
The world will miss Mrs. Macaluso , I remember her when she was single living dow n the cove ( couple doors down from Edgewood school) Bernolas were good people.
Mike our prayers are with you and the family
Brian & Judy and family,
