Mary Margaret Mazzone
April 13, 1938 ~ June 5, 2020
Mary Margaret Mazzone, 82, of Weirton, passed away Friday afternoon, June 5, at her son’s
residence in Newark, Ohio, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mary was born on April 13, 1938, in Follansbee, WV, to Daniel and Elvira Dalesio Confalone.
She attended St. Anthony’s Grade School and was a 1956 graduate of Follansbee High School, where she met the love of her life, Anthony “Tony” Mazzone. The two were married for 60 years before his passing in May 2019.
Mary was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Weirton for 56 years, where she was active in PTA, and treasurer of The Christian Mothers. She was an avid supporter of Catholic schools and a member and past president of Three Score. She was employed by Follansbee Steel Corporation, Stone & Thomas department store, J.J. Guida Realty, and Happy’s Restaurant.
She loved bingo and would amaze her family with her ability to keep an eye on their cards while still playing multiple cards of her own. She was always willing to buy items that neighborhood children sold door to door and raffle tickets for any good cause; she was rewarded for her generosity when more often than not, her purchased ticket would be declared a winner.
She loved to sit on her porch and visit with her neighbors, who were like family to her. More than anything, Mary treasured spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Mary will be remembered with love by her two sons, John (Lori) Mazzone of Newark, Ohio, and James (Roxanne) Mazzone of Weirton, seven grandchildren: Nicholas, Jessica, Maria, Jimmy, Gabrielle, and Mitchell Mazzone and Christine (Stephen) Travis; two sisters: Rita Guida and Linda McDonald, who lovingly called her “Babe”; and many nieces and nephews, who affectionately called her “Aunt Mimi.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one child lost during pregnancy.
Friends may call on Tuesday, June 9, from 4-8 p.m. at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, with rosary at 7:45 p.m. (Greco-Hertnick will have face masks available for those who desire them).
A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 140 Walnut Street, Weirton WV; entombment follows at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery, Weirton WV.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to Weirton Madonna
