Mary Mesaros Gullas, 92, of Weirton, WV, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2014, surrounded by her daughters at her home. The daughter of the late Michael and Anna Mesaros, Mary was born on November 26, 1921, in Barton, OH. Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph, who she loved dearly through 70 years of marriage, and her sister, Anne Kundrat. She is survived by her daughters, JoAnn Gullas Hill of Weirton, WV; Karen and her husband, Dr. Charles Joyce of Steubenville, OH; her granddaughter, Lindsay Joyce of Greenpointe, Brooklyn, NY; brother Dr. Michael and his wife, Alice Mesaros of Midland, Michigan. Mary graduated from Follansbee High School in 1939. She attended the Mason Frederick Cosmetology School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1940 and received her license to practice from Columbus, OH. She was employed as a beautician at the Giovanni Beauty Salon in Steubenville, OH In 1941, she married Joseph Gullas at St. Anthony's Church in Follansbee, WV. With the outbreak of World War II, she and Joseph, a commissioned Army officer, moved to Baltimore, MD. During the war, Mary was employed in the catalogue department of Montgomery Wards. At the end of the war, they returned to Weirton, WV. Mary was very active at the Marland Heights Elementary School where she served as the treasurer of the PTA. She was also very involved in fund-raising activities for the school. Mary was a parishoner of St. Paul's Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Mary was extremely loyal to her family and friends and was generous with her love and time. She enjoyed reading, listening to her music, and cooking, especially during the holidays. Above all, she loved and adored her family. She often referred to her only granddaughter as her darling and "the apple of her eye". During her last few years, Mary enjoyed train rides to New York City to visit her granddaughter, shop, attend plays, and dine in Manhattan. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A memorial Mass was held at St. Paul's Church with the Rev. Thomas Magary officiating. Private burial services were conducted at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Steubenville, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Hospice, Inc., 10686 State Route 150, Rayland, OH 43943.
