mary roberts

Mary Roberts, 96, a lifelong resident of Weirton, WV, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday December 10, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness.

Born on May 2, 1928, Mary was one of twelve children of Thomas and Marianna Baran Guz. She and her twin sister, Anna, were born on the Guz family farm in Kings Creek, where they spent their early years living a simple, hard-working life without electricity until they turned ten.

Growing up on the farm, Mary and her siblings contributed to daily chores, from milking cows and churning butter to catching chickens for dinner. These humble beginnings instilled in Mary a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for family and community.

A gifted seamstress, Mary used her talents to create beauty and functionality for those around her. She worked for Francis Drapery in Weirton and Gogol’s in Follansbee, crafting gowns, dresses, and intricate draperies. Her skills extended to her loved ones, as she generously hemmed and sewed for her family and friends. She made the curtains for the stage at the Weirton Millsop Center.

While working as a waitress at Pleasant Valley Country Club, Mary met the love of her life, Newt Roberts. The couple married on September 23, 1956, sharing 40 wonderful years of marriage until Newt’s passing on August 24, 1996. Together, they faced life’s joys and sorrows, including the heartbreaking loss of their infant son Jesse Eli Roberts on October 1, 1960.

Mary was also preceded in death by her parents, and all of her 11 siblings: John, Andrew, Chester, Edward, and Frank Guz; Julia V. Nogay; Eleanor Flowers; Virginia Najdecki; Genevieve Dobies; her twin, Anna Salanci; and Sophie Slanchik.

She will be remembered with love and admiration by her many nieces and nephews who cherished her as a second mother, as well as Newt’s children, Jack Roberts and Darlene Reed. Her love extended across generations to her great-nieces, great-nephews, and even great-great-nieces and nephews.

Mary was a faithful and active member of Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church. She volunteered her time, many days starting at 4 AM, to the church’s annual fish fry, where she helped prepare fish, homemade pierogies, and bread—a testament to her dedication to her faith and community.

Everyone will remember Mary’s life as a reflection of grace, beauty, and kindness. She never uttered an unkind word and carried herself with class and style.

Visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of her funeral at 12 Noon Thursday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton.

Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Weirton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church.

Special thanks to the staff and residents of Serra Manor for their loving care and kindness.
