Michael Hvizdzak, 88, of Weirton, passed away Monday, June 6, 2011, at his home. Born February 25, 1923 in Ubrez, Czechoslovakia, he was a son of the late Michael and Mary Varoscak Hvizdzak. He was also preceded in death by his sister Mary Matvias; and a great granddaughter, Christina Moore. Michael served his country during World War II with the United States Army Air Corps, where he flew 18 missions in New Guinea, Philippines and Luzon. With 35 years of service, Michael retired from Weirton Steel where he was an air compressor operator in the strip steel department of the 54' hot mill. When he was not working, Michael enjoyed woodworking, and carpentry, and made many Christmas decorations for his family and friends. He was a member of the St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for 60 years; St. Mary's Men's Club, a third degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus 3734, WSX 25-Year Club, AARP, Three Score Seniors and the Greek Catholic Union. Michael is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary A. Mohoroski Hvizdzak , whom he married November 13, 1948; sons David (Barbara) and Greg (Georgia) Hvizdzak all of Weirton and Edward (Faye) Hvizdzak of Colliers, WV; daughters, Honey (John) Moore and Michelle Lahita all of Weirton; 10 grandchildren, Christopher (Karen) Moore, Andrew Moore, Jennifer (Tom) Rowland, Nicole (Kristopher) Tingler, Michael (Toni) Hvizdzak, Laura Boni, Andrea and Cpl. Nicholas Hvizdzak, Spc. Philip Lahita, and Rachel (Kurtis) Shank; and, 11 great grandchildren. Friends will be received 6-8 PM Wednesday and 2-4 and 6-8PM Thursday at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited 7PM Wednesday. Parastas services will be held Thursday at 7:15 PM. Blessing Service will be held Friday at 9:30AM in the funeral home followed by the Funeral Liturgy at 10AM at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church with the Reverend Father Ed Lucas officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Weirton, with military services conducted by the American Legion Firing Squad.
