michael sabol
Michael Peter Sabol, age 69, an unconditional loving and selfless man, died on July 3, 2022, after complications of Leukemia. Michael was born December 14, 1952, in Weirton, the son of the late Alexander Sabol, Sr. and Theresa Zdinak.  He and his twin brother were premature and required incubation care at birth.  Michael experienced some adverse effects from incubation that affected his vision, requiring corrective lenses, however, to have known Michael was to know that he had been gifted with keen insight, especially in matters of faith. Michael was educated in the Weirton Public Schools and graduated from Weir Senior High in 1970. He furthered his education at West Liberty State College earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in 1974.  He then began a career with Sherwin-Williams Paint Company in Ohio, first as a store manager then sales manager of his region. When Sherwin-Williams did a national down-sizing, he began work with Hewlett Packard and information technology until his retirement. In his youth he was active in the Boy Scouts of America first with Troup 33 of the First Christian Church and then as a founding member of Troup 63 at Assumption of the Mother of God Byzantine Catholic Church (St. Mary’s Weirton) and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.  The scouting principles were exemplified throughout his life. He was industrious at a young age and began working in the Zdinak Family Bakery, Jo-El's at its Pennsylvania Avenue and Main Street locations from 1966 to 1970. A shining facet of Michael's life centered in his involvement at St. Mary's Weirton.  From a young age he served at the Divine Liturgies, and even ensured telephonic connectivity to radio station WEIR when the Liturgy was broadcast live every Sunday morning through local AM airwaves. He also was a commentator during the live broadcast. Michael was a part of the annual production of the parish's passion play every Palm Sunday at the Millsop Community Center. After years of lesser roles, Fr. Kushner chose him to portray Jesus as the lead in The Life of Christ. This was the capstone of Michael's spiritual core and ability to live a life of selfless giving.  He wanted each and every person he knew to have the best in life, to know they were loved and to know God's goodness.  He portrayed Christ for just under a decade in the final years of the plays twenty-five year run in Weirton. From his giving nature, Michael designed the first webpage for St. Mary’s and assisted in IT needs. Within the extended Zdinak family, Michael is counted among the family mystics, along with his Uncle Bill and Cousin Mary Jane.  To overhear all three while they were engaged in conversation was to peer into the essence of God. Michael married Dolores Olenick on September 18, 1977, and although they could not bear children on their own, they opened their hearts and home to numerous foster children and eventually were fortunate to adopt a very special one – three-year-old Megan Renee – who became the focus of their lives. In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by Dolores in 2011.    Michael is survived by his uncle Peter (Roselea) Zdinak of Wilmington, DE, Aunt Faylene Zdinak of Hummelstown, PA. The light of his life, adopted foster-daughter, Megan Renee Sabol and grandchildren Madison (Tyler) Jensen, Landen, Savannah, Laston, Slayton, Mevadah & Zealand and a great-grandson, Wade Ryan Jensen – all whom he loved dearly. Whenever they called out, “Grandpa,” he put his immense “Slovak Zedo” love into hyperdrive for them. He enjoyed their every visit at the Stone Pear Pavilion when they sang: “Yes, Jesus Loves Me” and prayed the Lord’s Prayer together. Also, from the day of his birth, he cared for all of his Sabol siblings: Twin brother Alexander (Anne) Sabol, Jr., of Centreville, VA.  Sisters:  Theresa Bocek of Fairfax, VA, Cecelia (Ed) Conley of Ponte Verde, FL, Mary Ann Sabol of Charlotte, NC, Elizabeth Jane (Kevin) Miller of Toronto, OH, Veronica Zaney of Charlotte, NC, and Joanne (Doug) Smith of Harmony, PA.  His extended family includes countless nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and many cousins across the country. Michael also wanted his cherished and beloved Goddaughter Eva Stewart to know how honored he was to share this special bond of faith. Eva became like a sister to his daughter Megan and they had some wonderful visits with Michael in his last months that will be cherished for a lifetime. Michael said: “In the ups and downs of life, there is always family!” He prayed daily for them all, as well as for many others throughout his life. Over his final days “Christos Voskrese!” by Peter Milenky & band was his meditation prayer as found on YouTube at, https//youtu.be/yF_LOITBarc Following Michael’s wishes there will be a direct cremation with no visitation or viewing. A Divine Liturgy for the Deceased will be offered for Michael at St. Mary’s 5:00 PM Saturday Liturgy, Saturday, July 16, 2022. The Reverend Father Michael Huszti will preside, parish Deacon Nathanael Kline will preach the homily based in the Holy Scriptures of the Divine Liturgy, recalling Michael's strong faith and reflecting on the beautiful name Michael, who challenges us to recall; "Who is like God?' The cantor for this Divine Liturgy will be Janet Winwood. For those out of town the Divine Liturgy is broadcast live on the St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church YouTube Channel as well as the parish Facebook Page. From the time of his recent diagnosis, the Byzantine Sisters of Saint Basil the Great in Uniontown, PA, have prayed daily for Michael. He was most appreciative to the late Reverend Father Robert Jones for coming to Weirton Medical Center on May 2, to provide spiritual care allowing him to receive the Holy Mystery of the Anointing of the Sick with Penance and Eucharist. Gratitude also goes to the parish Deacon, Nathanael Klein, for his visit of June 10 at the Stone Pear Pavillion, as well as his supportive calls, texts emails & prayers. Memorial contributions can be made through Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV 26062. The cremains will be interred on the graves of Michael’s paternal grandparents in Island Creek Cemetery in Toronto, Ohio at the convenience of his loved ones. . 1. We are deeply sorry for your loss ~ Greco Hertnick Funeral Home

  2. My deepest sympathy to the Sabol family. Mike and I were classmates. He was very intelligent ,had a great sense of humor and a friend to all. May he Rest In Peace.

  3. Michael, thank you for allowing me to assist you in preparing all of your end-of-life needs. The Holy Spirit definitely was with us during our final visit in May when together we belted out Christos Voskrese in Church Slavonic and then Megan joined in as we sang Christ is Risen in English. We were on holy ground and five-week-old Zealand shared that moment with you! You are now my “go-to” in Heaven and when I want to sense you near, I go to YouTube and watch: “I’m Here” by Deaplee, it reminds me of your calm and comforting presence. Your daughter Megan and her children as well as great-grandson Wade are your legacy and are proud to bear the Sabol name as your progeny! Stas’ Tuchalski – Kissimmee, Florida

  4. As a past member of St Marys I remember Michael. My father was a member of the Passion Play for many years also. May Michael Rest in Peace now.

  5. My sincere condolences to the Sabol and Zdinak Families. St. Mary’s was my childhood church and Michael shared memories with me on social media. May God bless all of the family, friends, loved ones, doctors and other medical staff, and clergy that helped Michael until his time came.

  6. Cecilia, Ed and Megan..I am so heartbroken over the loss of brother/father. What a kind soul Michael was. Dee and Michael worked with me several years ago; he touched the hearts of many of the coworkers. And Megan, do you remember the ‘orb’ in the picture I took of you & the kids after your mom passed? Again I am so sorry for your loss. Michael’s at peace and with Dee who he loved so deeply. I will keep you in my prayers

  7. Glory to Jesus Christ! Thank you, Stanley, for sharing this on behalf of Megan with us … so beautifully done. + Michael certainly led a full life, touching so many lives on his journey. Now, it’s certain that he still remembers all of us. We send many prayers and blessings to all of you with our love and prayers. — The Sisters of Saint Basil the Great at Mount Saint Macrina in Uniontown, PA —

  8. Michael, you have left us, but we will have your memories to remember. Your faith has been carried on with your grandchildren. Yes, they love to sing about Jesus. They loved you and Jesus. Every day you can hear them singing, “Yes, Jesus loves you.” I can recall participating in the Passion Play with you. You were Jesus Christ in my eyes and I portrayed Mary Magdalene. You, like Christ, had suffered many trials and tribulations in your life. You trusted in God. Despite your health and hardships, you helped others like Jesus Christ. I can proudly say that I held you up in the darkest times. It was my responsibility to hold onto the cross during the crucifixion scene. For I was the anchor of your life as you portrayed Christ. If I failed in my role, you fell down. In return, I had your blood, sweat, and tears showered down on me. We work together in making a dramatic scene. Being Mary Magdalene, I had the opportunity to first learn of your resurrection. So now, I am rejoicing for you have resurrected from your earthly body. “Peace be with You.” you would say as Christ. So with that I am at peace with your passing. Michael, I was waiting for you to come back..after 3 days. For you see as Jesus Christ you returned to us. Instead, you have returned to the arms of your parents and the other 5 people you meet in heaven So your are my new angel Saint Michael! Saint Michael, Please pray be our protection against the wickedness and snarls of the devil. Eternal rest grant him peace. For with Jesus Christ he granted life . Thank you for touching and being in my life, Cousin, Yvonne Tuchalski

  9. I knew Michael from Springfield Ohio when he worked at Sherwin Williams with my brother. He became good friends with my Dad and we had alot of good times messing around with computers. Have alot of good memories and will miss him. RIP Mike

  10. As a young boy I looked up to Michael and his twin brother Alex as the big brothers I did not have. They were 4 years older than me. I observed their reverence at Mass as altar servers, their example in school studies and community service, and their work ethic which inspired me to emulate them in service to God, Community and Country. Michael lived a good Christian life and is right with the Lord, something we all strive for after a life well lived. May God continue to Bless Michael and everyone who loves him! Vichnaya Pamyat! Eternal Memories!

  11. My heart felt sympathy to the Sabol family of the loss of Michael. I know you all loved him in your own special ways. He was a very loving person who loved his family, faith, and grandchildren. He had a very special love of his God daughter Virginia which I have a special gift from him to her. He loved all his nieces and nephews of which he was so proud of their intelligence and careers as their goals. His love of his twin brother was unconditional whom he was very proud of his accomplishments in his career. He was very proud of all his sisters and said you all had a special personality towards him. He talked highly of you all and I apologize I haven’t said this earlier. It was a great loss for me and even that I knew his passing was coming closer, when it happened it put me in a state of shock. We was BEST FRIENDS and his loss will ever be in my heart. God bless all you and my deepest sympathy to you all. ❤️🙏🏻

  12. Michael Sabol is pictured kneeling on the far right of this published photo for the Thirteeth Annual “Life of Christ” Passion Play in 1966, when he acted in lesser roles. The photo appeared in the Weirton Daily Times on March 30 of that year.

  13. In 1973 Michael had already been cast as Jesus in “The Life of Christ” Passion Play presented by St. Mary’s Byzantine Church each Palm Sunday at the Weirton Community Center. This photo was on the front page of The Weirton Daily Times on Tuesday, April 10th

  14. Michael’s smile in this photo punctuates how much he loved being the husband of Dolores and father of Megan Renee. Having a family and being with family was paramount for him in life.

  15. On Monday, May 2, Michael was transported to Weirton Medical Center because he was urgently in need of units of blood due to the ravages of Leukemia. Immediately upon being informed, the Reverend Father Robert Jones made a pastoral visit to Michael and celebrated the Holy Mysteries with him. Michael, along with everyone in the tri-state area was shocked to learn of Fr. Robert’s death just days later. Michael and I had a conversation that one day he would be with Fr. Robert and all the deceased priests of St. Mary’s for the ultimate Divine Liturgy. Vičnaja Pamjat

  16. Michael’s Daughter and his Goddaughter Eva Kolonsky Stewart prayerfully participated at the Divine Liturgy for the Deceased offered on Saturday, July 16th at St. Mary’s Byzantine in Weirton. Other family, acquaintances, and friends were personally in attendance, however, over a few hundred -from far and wide – have partaken in viewing the Recorded live-stream on Facebook and YouTube. Michael has therefore been remembered by many for his Christian kindness through the years.

  17. Assumption of the Mother of God Church Bulletin on the weekend of 16/17 July listing the Intentions of the Divine Liturgies and inviting all who participated in the Memorial Liturgy for Michael to gather for a Coffee Social provided by the good people of St. Mary’s Byzantine Parish.

  18. Nearly forty-five years ago the festivities surrounding the marriage of Michael Peter Sabol and Dolores Ann Olenick were joyous and grandiose — literally “the talk of the town.” Legend has it that hundreds packed St. Mary’s for the Marriage Liturgy and the Knights of Columbus catering prepared food for one thousand who were seated in both the large and small halls of the facility. It was a beautiful fall day filled with love and happiness!
