Michael P. Comer, 76, of New Cumberland, WV died Saturday July 14, 2017, at the Weirton Geriatric Center. Born on August 14, 1940, in New Cumberland, WV, Michael was the son of the late Michael and Elaine Evans Comer. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret “Peggy” Harcharic Comer on December 30, 2000; and his sister, Patricia Hilderbrand. A County Surveyor, Michael spent the majority of his management career in manufacturing. He was employed with Koppers prior to spending his next 17 years with Airco Welding Products. After the closing of the Airco plant, he joined the management team of Washington Steel and Medrad before retiring from the Shipping Department of Timet, in Toronto, OH. After retirement he helped his wife at their family’s business New Cumberland Candle Company. In his free time Michael enjoyed talking on his ham radio and CB radio, collecting fiestaware and driving his 1975 Corvette to car cruises. Most of all he enjoyed attending his sons and grandchildren’s sporting events and most recently his grandson’s baseball games. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, New Cumberland, Kiwanis and Lion’s Club, and the Catholic Men’s Club. In years past he was very active with the Weirton Jaycees. Michael is survived by his wife, Joyce Jasenec Comer, whom he married on October 26, 2002; his sons, Michael Comer (Valerie Volosin) of Scott Depot, Matthew Comer (Tracy Martino) of Barboursville, WV, and Joe Fernandez (Ashley) of Weirton, WV ; his daughters, Lora Huehn (William) of Duncannon, PA, and Jo-el Fernandez (Sandy Greenhouse) of Niantic, CT; his nine grandchildren, Evan, Andrew and Madalyn Comer, Megan Ressler (Andrew), Aiden and Gavin Fernandez, Presley Streblo, Dylan Cunningham and Brendan Suroviak; and a great granddaughter, Ava Krauss. Visitation will be Monday 4- 8 PM at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, where the Liturgy of the Word Funeral Services will be held 11 AM Tuesday. Rev. Fr. Tony Thurston will preside. Interment will follow at Saint Paul’s Cemetery, Weirton. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association www.diabetes.org.
