olga adams

Olga Adams, 87, of Weirton, WV, a beloved mother, Yiayiá, sister, and educator, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025, at the Weirton Geriatric Center.

Born on June 1, 1937, in Steubenville, Ohio, she was one of three children born to Manolis “Mike” and Evangelia Kostarides Arnas.

Olga was a woman of remarkable strength and independence, known for her feisty spirit, courage, and a tireless work ethic. She lived her life as a trailblazer both personally and professionally, taking on all challengers. She was a person of action who relentlessly pursued physical fitness and academic achievements – and expected the same of her sons. Generally known as a “tough but fair” teacher, she inspired countless students though her passion for education, sometime unconventional methods, and her high expectations.

A 1955 graduate of Follansbee High School, Olga earned a Bachelor’s Degree from West Liberty State College in 1958, a Master’s Degree in Education from West Virginia University in 1972, and accumulated 45 hours of advanced studies toward her Doctorate. Her teaching career spanned several decades, including 22 1⁄2 years at Weir High School, two years at Steubenville Big Red High School, and substitute teaching at Weirton Madonna High School – all in addition to teaching various courses at Franciscan University of Steubenville, West Virginia Northern Community College, and the Jefferson Technical Institute.

Beyond her career in education, Olga was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church where she was active in the choir and several organizations, including the Daughters of Penelope, Ladies Philoptochos Society, as well as teaching children in the Greek Language School. She was a founding member of the Hancock County School Employees Federal Credit Union and served on its Board as Treasurer and was its Assistant Manager.

For fun, Olga enjoyed exercise, golf, walking, and travel.

Olga was preceded in death by her parents, Manolis and Evangelia Kostarides Arnas, and her brother, George M. Arnas, M.D.

A woman of great character, Olga’s legacy will live on through her three sons, George, Michael, and Christo(Nicole) Adams. She took great pride in raising them to be independent and disciplined, with an emphasis on academics and hard work. Olga was a proud ” Yiayiá”, helping to shape the lives of her grandchildren, Amelia, Alexis, Nicolas, Nolan, and Van Adams. She will also be missed by her beloved sister Dorothea Stakias, nieces, nephews, as well as many friends and colleagues.

Special thanks to Dr. Christopher Cowher and staffs of Hope Cottage, Weirton Geriatric Center, and Classic Cutters Salon for the care and special treatment provided throughout the years.

A visitation will be held on Friday from 3 PM until 7 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street Weirton. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday from 10 AM until the time of the Funeral Liturgy at 11AM at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Weirton.

Fr. Matthew Moore will preside.

She will be laid to rest at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Weirton.

Memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. George & Mike — your mom always had a very special place in my heart. May her memory be a blessing. Deepest sympathy and, sadly, empathy.

  2. What a GREAT lady. A life well lived…..may she rest in peace.
With deepest sympathy to George, Mike, Christo and the entire family.

  3. To Olga’s family,
What a lady! When I first started teaching, first person to welcome me to the credit union. So helpful and caring. RIP
    Sue Fadse

  4. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy. Olga and I were best friends for many of our school years and years after school. It is with great sadness that I read of her passing.

    Mary Lou and Jim Bonaventura

  5. Christo and family,
We are saddened by your loss. We pray that sharing memories, stories, and laughter (hopefully) will bring you some comfort.

  6. Candle Selection 8My deepest condolences to Olga’s family. I met her while working in the Anas Building and I have never met a classier lady. One thing she taught me and I will always remember is… “Hair, nails & then everything else” I still live by this today! She was truly a lady through and through and I am blessed to have known her. Rest in peace, my friend.

  7. I met Olga while she was at Hope Cottage with my mother.
Such a sweet, pleasant lady,, always had a smile!
My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.

  8. Rest in peace. I am proud to have sang in the choir with you for a few years. The entire All Saints community loves and misses you, Olga Adams. Memory eternal.

  9. To the Adams family, I would like to offer our sincere condolences for your loss. Your mom will be remembered as a woman who touched so many lives outside of her family, well as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and so much more. A respected teacher who touched and influenced so many young lives. God bless, RIP Mrs. Adams.

  10. To Christo and the family,
Very sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. She was very inspirational to my becoming an educator. I remember Delores Pickens reviewing my schedule for my sophomore year and she said of having Mrs. Adams, “Be prepared to work hard and work you will.” And I sure did. Even having her the following year. She was dedicated and tough (and very funny at times). I will always appreciate having the honor of her as my teacher. RIP Mrs. Adams. Prayers to you all.

  11. Fond memories of a FINE lady. Her independence, knowing, compassion to educate. I didn’t have the privilege of being a former student but I know the mark SHE in Weirton! My sympathies to all.

  12. I did not get to know Olga until my career path crossed hers at the Credit Union. She was always so full of enthusiasm and ideas, and I so enjoyed working with her. Her energy was contagious. May her legacy continue to inspire generations to come. Certainly she has left many students that have benefited from her positive nature and influence.

  13. Such a remarkable lady who touched so many lives. I am sure you have so many great memories to comfort you during this time. She is certainly sleeping at peace with God’s angels! Sincere sympathy to her family.

  14. Candle Selection 7Olga was a great friend and former neighbor.. We lived next door to each other on Weirton Heights. We were always talking and visiting together . I’m so sorry to hear of her passing. Condolences to her family.

  15. Candle Selection 4Mrs. Adams was honestly the best teacher I’ve ever had. I learned so much from her and she made learning fun. She was an exemplary role model. Very classy lady. I’m so glad I had the honor of knowing her. Sympathy to her family. 🩷

  16. I am so sorry to to hear Mrs Adams has passed away. She was my 5th grade teacher in 1966 at St. Joseph the Worker grade school, Weirton .
I recognized her photo right away… she still looks the same. Prayers to her family for peace and comfort.

  17. Today, in the midst of tragedy, I saw three men, lay their Mother to rest, with such dignity and Grace! A true testament of whom their Mother raised! Georgie, Mikey , Christo, and your beautiful families, God be with you all !!!
