Patrick Kopa
May 30, 1925 ~ December 21, 2020
Patrick Kopa, 95, of Weirton, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020.
Patrick was born on May 30, 1925, in Penowa, PA, one of ten children born to George and Mary Luczanich Kopa.
At the age of 20, he served his country in the United States Army, where he served at the tail end of World War II as a private first class in the European Theatre.
On September 9, 1950, four years after returning home from the service, Patrick married Theresa Rogalski. In their 58 years of marriage, they were blessed with five children, six grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
Theresa took care of the home, and Patrick was a tin plate operator in the tin mill of Weirton Steel.
Pat was not afraid to tackle any job from pouring concrete to laying brick to siding his house; he could do it all. He loved to tinker with electronics, and he proudly built his family’s first color TV in 1964. Pat also loved to garden. At the age of 95, he grew 36 tomato plants to share with family and friends.
A tough old cookie, Pat will always be remembered and admired for his old school ways.
Pat nourished his faith every Saturday evening at Saint Mary’s Byzantine Church in Weirton.
He was also a member of the American Legion Post 10 and the Weirton Steel 25 Year Club.
In addition to his parents, Pat was preceded in death by his wife Theresa Rogalski Kopa on March 15, 2008; their son, Robert Kopa; his four brothers, Charles, John, George, and Andrew Kopa; and his three sisters, Ann Von-Bergen, Elizabeth Allen and Mary Boniey.
He will be remembered with love by his three sons, Michael (Michele), David, and William (Diane) Kopa; his daughter, Susan(Paul) Rafacz; his brother, Steve (Eleanora ) Kopa; his sister, (Helen), Sister Mary Euphemia; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held at Saint Mary’s Byzantine Catholic at 4 PM on Wednesday and live-streamed on the Saint Mary’s Facebook page.
Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home is in charge of Patrick’s arrangements.
Patrick’s family would like to say a special thank-you to Sarah Wright, dad’s caregiver and buddy. Dad loved seeing you, and we so appreciate your wonderful care of our father.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Mary’s Byzantine Church 3116 Elm Street Weirton, WV 26062.
