Paul Allen Miller, Jr.
July 25, 1931 ~ April 23, 2021
Paul Allen Miller, Jr. of Weirton, a loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away suddenly on Friday, April 23, 2021. He was 89.
Paul was born in Chicago, IL, on July 25. 1931, the first of two children born to Paul Allen Miller, Sr. and Vera Shanks Miller.
When Paul was a young boy, his family moved to where employment opportunities arose. In his high school years, his family settled in Waupaca, Wisconsin and Paul graduated from Waupaca High School, where he was the recipient of the John Phillip Souza Award, an award recognizing the best drummer in the high school band in the State of Wisconsin. He was also a talented shortstop, which resulted in a tryout with a semi-pro team, the New York Giants.
After high school, Paul served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War.
After serving in the war, Signode Corporation brought Paul to Weirton. This is where he met a young telephone operator named Voneta “Sis” Smith. The two fell in love and were married on January 28, 1956. In their 65 years of marriage, they were blessed with a son, three daughters, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Paul and Sis’s lives revolved around their family and their church. They nourished their faith at the Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church, where Paul served as a deacon, trustee, and was active in the Men’s Fellowship and the Pairs and Spares. They also enjoyed volunteering their time with the Weirton Christian Center. Paul was also a member of the National Fishing Lures Collectors Club.
Paul retired after forty years as a weighmaster with Signode. Still young, Paul was able to spend his retirement years enjoying his lifelong passion of fishing and collecting fishing lures. He enjoyed fishing numerous waterways including Kings Creek, Thomlinson Run, Ohio River, Buffalo Creek, and the lakes and streams of Wisconsin.
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jeff Cooper.
Paul will be remembered with love by his wife, Voneta “Sis” (Smith) Miller son, Paul Allen Miller, III; daughters, Cindy Cooper, Tami (Tom) Vernau; Kim (Don) Greenlief; sister, Kathy (Gordy) Hansen; grandchildren, Michael and Rachel Miller, Danielle (Joe) Carnes, Heather Greenlief, Dr. Brian (Kate) Vernau, Danny (Lauren) Vernau; and his great-grandchildren, Cooper, Colette, William, Caroline, Cora, Nolan, and Mylan.
Due to COVID 19, a private family service will be held with Pastor Bill Stout presiding.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Weirton Christian Center 117 Ivy Street Weirton, WV 26062

We are sorry to learn of Paul’s passing. Paul came into my life when he married my sister. Paul was my introduction to a different kind of man than most around me. He loved fishing like my dad and uncles but also has a softer side. To my delight, Sis and Paul soon had a baby . I became an Aunt at age six. At the time, they lived just a few streets away. I was invited to play with my little nieces often. Paul included me in many activities with his own children. I can remember him filling a wading pool for us and tending his beloved garden. He grew the most beautiful gladiolous. Paul worked hard building stonework in the yard. His caring side also exquisitely hand wrapped gifts. Paul always took the time to listen and help where he could. He was a family man in the truest sense. Paul’s life on Earth has certainly earned his wings in Heaven. RIP dear man. Sis,Cindy,Tammy,Kim, Paul and all family member…. May God comfort you at this time of great sorrow. Gayle & Howard Geisenheiner

So sorry to hear of Paul passing. I worked at Signode with him for a couple of years before he retired. He was such a nice person and truly helped me adjust to being a young, new Supervisor stepping into a role with such a well seasoned workforce that knew so much more than I did. Paul was so friendly and welcoming and I cannot express how much I appreciated that! Rick Kinney
