Ralph N. Block, DDS, 88, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family on Saturday, February 28, 2009. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on Sept. 28, 1920. Ralph graduated from Triadelphia High School in 1938, attended WVU and graduated from Northwestern Dental School in 1943. He served in the Army Dental Corp in Belgium and Germany during WWII, then served as a dentist in the Air Force for nine years. In 1958 he established a dental practice in Weirton, WV from which he retired in 1993. He was a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Endodontics, the WV Dental Association which presented him with a Certificate of Distinction in 2008 in recognition of 50 years of service to the public and profession. Ralph was a member of the Wheeling Oglebay Tennis Club and the USTA. In retirement, he demonstrated his passion for life through his tireless promotion of tennis among his local friends and colleagues. In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his brother, Herman. He is survived by his wife, Veronica Welters Block, whom he married in 1954; one son, David, of Wheeling, WV; two daughters, Janet Toth (Doug) of Pittsburgh, PA and Barbara Koontz (Rob) of Rochester, NY; two grandsons, Doug and Brad Koontz, of Rochester, NY; and one niece, Nancy Riley, of Oklahoma City, OK. Dr. Block's family will receive friends Friday, March 6, 2009, from 10AM until the 11AM Memorial Service at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Hospice, 10686 State Route 150, Rayland, OH 43943 or to the charity of your choice.
