rita dicarlo
Rita Dahlia DiCarlo age 72 passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2022. After a period of illness, she spent her last days at Valley Hospice at Trinity Medical Center West in Steubenville with her sisters and cousins at her side. The family wishes to thank Valley Hospice for their assistance in keeping Rita comfortable in her last days. Rita was born July 6, 1950, in Steubenville, Ohio to Galdo and Carmelina (Santarelli) DiCarlo. Rita had a happy childhood growing up in an Italian American family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins of the DiCarlo, Yannon, Santarelli, Carapellotti and DeVictor families. She attended Holy Name Cathedral Grade School and graduated in 1968 from Steubenville Catholic Central High School. She earned a degree in Education from Kent State University and her career path included time at Steubenville City Schools, Franciscan University of Steubenville and the YMCA Wellness Center at St. John Arena. To care for those who once cared for us was extremely important to Rita. She was a great caregiver to her mom who became ill at a young age as well as her dad and her Aunt Dahlia later in their lives. Her family greatly appreciates Rita for her selflessness in giving her time and effort to care for others. As the daughter of Galdo DiCarlo, the co-founder of DiCarlo’s Pizza in 1945, Rita was proud of her legacy in the pizza and bakery business in the Ohio Valley. Rita loved cooking and her form of therapy was serving up a great meal for family and friends. Survivors include her sisters Caroline (Albert) Magnone and sons Vince, Antonio and Angelo; Anna Marie DiCarlo and sons David and Nick; and Toni DiCarlo, son Christopher and daughter Lauren; and sister-in-law Debbie DiCarlo and son Joe and daughter Alexis; along with numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Joe DiCarlo. A Funeral Mass will take place in the St. Joseph’s Cathedral, 1300 Eoff Street, Wheeling, WV at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, August 10th. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a gesture of remembrance consider a donation to the Jefferson County Humane Society, 200 Airpark Drive, Wintersville, OH 43953 or the Public Library of Steubenville, 407 South 4th Street, Steubenville, OH 43952.
