Rose Marie Van Dine, 86, of Weirton, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2022. Born on February
23, 1936, in Weirton, WV, Rose was the daughter of the late Charles and Stella Szymanek-Zias. She was
preceded in death by her husband Wayne Van Dine, Sr. and her sister, Anne Burskey. A devoted wife,
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Rose’s surviving family includes her brother, Charles Zias
(Hon) of Weirton; her four children, Diane Eafrati-Buchanon (Michael) of Brigantine, NJ, Gwen Cartier
(Roy) of Pittsburgh, PA, Wayne Van Dine, Jr. (Donna) of Gambrills, MD, and David Van Dine (Margie) of
Cleveland, NY; five grandchildren, Landon Eafrati (Kelly), Jenn and Emily Cartier, Tory and Devin Van
Dine; one great- grandson, Triston Eafrati; and three nephews.
In her youth, Rose worked as a baker and a telephone operator, but her true calling was found in
raising her family. Rose’s family fondly describes her as a feisty and tenacious woman with a quick wit.
Known for her cleverness and candor, she could always add humor to any conversation. Rose’s small
stature could not contain her strong will and larger-than-life personality that was uniquely all her own.
Rose’s husband Wayne loved her ability to unexpectedly deliver “zingers,” which he always met with
delighted, booming laughter. She frequently stated that marrying her husband was the best thing to
ever happen to her, which was evident in all the ways she expressed her love for him and the immense
pride Rose had in her role as his wife.
As Rose’s husband, Wayne showed his love and appreciation for his wife by continuously boasting about
her cooking prowess, ingenuity, and beauty. Yet every time Wayne attempted to take a photo of the
wife he adored, she shot him her patented side-eyed “look” with a mix of exasperation and affection.
Rose was an accomplished, prize-winning quilter and a creative craftswoman. She always displayed her
savviness for any craft medium she set her mind to by creating meaningful gifts and everyday items for
her loved ones; including doll clothes, holiday decorations, and decorated baked goods. She was also
adept at tackling home improvement solutions only she was capable of imagining.
Rose had a generous heart and also shared her talents for baking and cooking by volunteering her time
at the Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Golden Oaks Nursing Home in Follansbee, WV for the kind
and compassionate care provided to Rose in her final months.
Visitation for Rose will be held at the Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Weirton on
