Scherry Ann Wright of Weirton, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023. She was eighty-one years old.
She was born in Steubenville on July 6, 1942, the daughter of Alnetta Grimm Thompson and Orbin Thompson.
Scherry was a graduate of Follansbee High School Class of 1960 and married Gerald “Bud” Wright on May 28, 1960. Scherry and Bud were married for 46 years until Bud’s passing on December 15, 2006.
In addition to her parents and husband, Scherry was preceded in death by her sister Patty Bish and brother David Thompson.
Surviving are her siblings Lee Thompson and Rosemary Clark of Canton OH, children Mitchell (Jeff Raper) Wright of Pittsburgh, Jeffrey (Tiina) Wright of Erlanger, KY., Kristen (Ted) Frambes of Pittsburgh, and Cindy Wright Hammond of Ft. Worth, TX, grandchildren Brandon and Elizabeth Frambes, Timothy and Lorin Hammond and Alexander and Samuel Wright, and nine (9) great-grandchildren.
Scherry took great pride in being the spouse of a US Army soldier. From 1961 through 1971, she and Bud were stationed in Hawaii, Texas, Oklahoma, Germany and South Carolina. This was during the Korean and Vietnam wars in which Bud served three tours. Life in the military was sometimes lonely and stressful and Scherry (and Bud) found support in a group of families who were stationed together in the states and Germany for several years. The Fonda, Sandlin, Jordan and Sharp families were an important piece of Scherry’s life and memories.
Upon retirement from the military, Scherry and Bud settled in Weirton and raised their children surrounded by a large extended family in Weirton, Bellaire and Canton OH and Rockville, MD. During the 1970’s and 80’s, Scherry could be found shuttling her children, nieces, nephews and neighborhood children to the Maryland Heights pool, or attending Starvaggi little league games, local dance recitals and Brooke High School band events, parades and competitions, and other BHS sporting events.
The ”Wright” house was active for many years and served as “home base” for many neighborhood kids. Scherry resided in her home for 52 years through 2022.
Scherry and Bud traveled extensively throughout the 90’s and enjoyed being grandparents, visiting their children and grandchildren in numerous states and overseas.
Scherry had a love of reading, always; and was an avid sports fan to the end, enjoying countless hours of tennis, golf, baseball, basketball and football. Scherry was a loyal West Virginia University and Ohio State fan (it is possible).
Scherry was a Christian by faith and attended the First Christian Church in Weirton and raised her family in the First Baptist Church of Weirton.
Scherry was close with several childhood cousins Susie Hawkins, JoAnn Dryer, Lynnellen Winkler and Sissy Mellott. These remarkable women provided Scherry with love and support over many years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and in her final year.
Graveside services will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery where Scherry will be buried with her husband, a date to be determined.
Memorial donations may be made in Scherry’s honor to the Disabled American Veterans or American Lung Association.
