Shirley Amelia Petroski,77, of Weirton, WV, a beloved mother, sister, aunt and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024, in Weirton Medical Center.
She was born on August 30, 1946, in Wheeling, WV, to the late Joseph and Elizabeth Tkacs Mehall.
Shirley’s academic journey was marked by an unwavering commitment to education. She earned her master’s plus 45 in Education, studying at West Virginia University, West Liberty State College, and Franciscan University of Steubenville. Her passion for teaching was evident in her long and distinguished career with Brooke County Schools, where she inspired countless young minds as a fifth-grade teacher at Edgewood and Follansbee Elementary Schools.
Known affectionately as the family photographer, Shirley captured countless moments of joy and togetherness. An avid reader, she had a special fondness for romance novels, mysteries, and the Harry Potter series, and she encouraged all her students to develop a love for reading. Shirley also had a soft spot for her miniature poodle, Angel, and delighted in collecting stuffed animals.
A woman of deep faith, Shirley nourished her spirituality at Grace Lutheran Church in Steubenville, OH. Her kindness, love, and unwavering dedication to her family and community were hallmarks of her character. She was a devoted mother, raising her daughter as a single parent from the time her daughter was just six months old. Her greatest joy was walking her daughter who is also her best friend down the aisle on her wedding day 23 years ago.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Tkacs Mehall, and her beloved sister, Connie Smith.
Her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be deeply missed
but fondly remembered by her daughter, Kristan (David) Webb, who will forever
cherish the memories and love they shared. Visitation will be Tuesday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Steubenville, OH from 12 noon until the time of her funeral at 2 PM.
She will be laid to rest at Fort Steuben Burial Estates, Wintersville, OH

Dear Kristan,
I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of your mother. Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. I felt so fortunate to have had your mother as my fifth-grade teacher at Edgewood. I still remember how she greeted us each day with such warmth and the biggest smile. Her kindness, genuine understanding, and joy of teaching made it so easy to connect with her. She will always hold a very special place in my heart and I am incredibly grateful for the time I had with her. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you.
