Sophie Francis Pavel of Weirton passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024, at her residence following a brief illness. She was 93 years old.

Sophie was born in Colliers on May 12, 1930, a daughter of Ignatius and Francis Chanze Koniski

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-eight years, John S. (Sonny Paul) Pavel, Sr., son Richard Pavel, grandson Christopher Pavel, sons-in-law, Chuck Aracich, Keith Little, and David Smith, Sr., and eight siblings.

Sophie worked at Weirton Steel as a Tin Flopper before having children. She volunteered at the Weirton Christian Center as a Pre-School Teacher. She was a member of the Beloved Mother’s Club and Ladies Auxiliary of the Weirton Volunteer Fire Department and worked for the Hancock County Election poles.

Sophie was the biggest fan of all her children and her grandchildren in all their activities. She could be found spending time at all her family’s functions, enjoying playing bingo, cards, life in general, and going to garage sales.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church and had a strong Catholic faith.

Sophie will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Geraldine (Dennie) Aracich Anna Smith, Mary (Tim) Little-Samples, Paula (John) Lane, sons John (Patty) Pavel Jr., Teddy (Judy) Pavel, and Robert Pavel, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received Tuesday, February 6, 2024, from 4 -7 pm at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 pm Wednesday, February 7, at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, 140 Walnut Street, Weirton.

Entombment will be in Saint Paul’s Cemetery.
