Sophie Skrab, 88, of Weirton died Saturday January 6, 2007, at the Valley Hospice Palliative Care, in Steubenville, OH. She was born on July 17, 1918, in Warsaw Poland. She came to this country at the age of fourteen, eleven years after her mother had come to join her father here. An aunt in Poland had reared her until her parents were able to send for her to come to the United States. Sophie married George Skrab, when she was sixteen years old, and together they had four children. She worked in the Weirton Medical Laundry for over 26 years, before her retirement. When her parish, of Sacred Heart of Mary, was located in the north end of Weirton, she cooked for the Sacred Heart of Mary School, the Holy Name breakfasts, many showers, and weddings. Sophie was selected to serve as the Grand Marshall of the Weirton Fourth of July Parade. She loved to crochet and read. For many years she crocheted many afghans, and baby doll dresses, to be donated to the Children’s Homes in Wheeling and Huntington, Fox Run Hospital, Weirton Geriatric, and the Weirton Salvation Army. Sophie was a member of the Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, the Rosary Society, and a past member of various card and birthday clubs. Sophie was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, George on November 13, 1979. She is survived by her three sons, George and Thomas of Weirton, and Robert of Gaithersburg, MD.; a daughter Dorothy, with whom she resided; a brother, Anthony Malin of Hayward, CA; a sister, Mary Barbieri of San Bruno, CA; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Visitation will be 2- 8PM on Monday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton. Funeral liturgy with mass will be celebrated 10 AM Tuesday at the Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Kent Durig will preside.
