Susie Lucille Szymanek, 89, of Weirton, died surrounded by her family, Monday February 23, 2015, at the Wyngate Senior Living Community. Born on September 12, 1925, in Weirton, WV, Susie was a daughter of the late Domenick and Mary Mercurio Rotell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Felix James Szymanek, on November 14, 1986, a daughter, Catherine Costello; a brother, Patsy Rotell; six sisters, Pasquelina Pulice, Angela Mercurio, Minnie Rocchio, Rose Tedesco, Concetta Pate, and Ann Hoover. Susie received her Undergraduate degree from West Liberty State College, and her Master's degree from West Virginia University. With over twenty years of service, Susie retired from Steubenville City Schools, where she was a Reading Specialist. She also served as a Reading Recovery Supervisor with The Ohio State University. An avid reader, writer and educator, Susie authored a children's book, Bumble Bee and a soon to be published novel. Most of all Susie found her enjoyment volunteering, tutoring, and helping children improve their reading skills. Susie was a faithful and devoted member of Saint Paul's Roman Catholic Church, and the Christian Mothers. Susie is survived by her two sons, Robert Szymanek (Lori) of Richmond, OH, and Thomas Szymanek (Pamela) of Weirton, WV; her twin daughters, Patricia Cowan (Roger) of Weirton, WV and Deborah Budash (John) of New Port Richey, FL; her eleven grandchildren, Monica (Mark) Caranda, Julie and T.J. Szymanek, Daniel (Jennifer) Costello, Robert (Carie) Costello, Stephanie (Josh) Kolanko, Heather (Erin) DiBacco, Shanna (Garn) Earley, Mandi (Jason) Figlioli; Danielle Budash, and Schanda Budney; her twenty great grandchildren, Jacob and Cole Caranda, Madison, Jenna, Johncraig, Taelor, Ethan, and Kearston Costello, Mishaela, Kayla, and Catherine Kolanko, Lance and Lillian DiBacco, Anthony and Isabella Earley, Angelo and Enzo Figlioli, Ava Budney, Maximus and Raya Utt; and her great great grandson Joshua Craig. Visitation will be Tuesday 4 to 8 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Wednesday at Saint Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Weirton. Rev. Fr. Larry Dorsch will preside. Interment will follow at Saint Paul's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Paul's Grade School, 140 Walnut Street, Weirton, WV 26062.
