Thomas Earl Smith, 73, of Wellsburg, WV, passed away unexpectedly on February 6, 2024. Born September 19, 1950, in Wheeling, WV, Tom was the youngest son of the late Richard and Alice DeGarmo Smith. Tom was also preceded in death by his older sister, Mary Ann Smith Wilson, and his younger sister, Carol Smith, and 2 very special dogs that have been waiting ever so patiently, Grimm and Miley.

After 30 years of dedicated service, Thomas retired from WSX as a Rigger. He had a vast knowledge and understanding of how things worked. After retirement, Tom briefly did some safety consulting work for various firms.

He was a member of the WSX 25 Year Club and a past Master Mason at the Wellsburg No.2 Masonic Lodge.

Tom had a giving nature about him, always willing to help in any way he could. In his spare time, Tom enjoyed metal detecting, visiting the local casinos with his wife, and tinkering on various projects as he listened to Tom T. Hall. Even if you didn’t want to know his rash opinion, he would tell you, but would always follow it up later with “I love you.” He was also known for his witty and unique sense of humor and “non-repeatable” one-liners. But most of all, he enjoyed the company of his granddaughters and family- even his four-legged buddies (whom he always threatened to take to the dog pound, but he would always be found sneaking treats to them under the table and sharing the couch with them.)

Thomas is survived and sadly missed by his wife Gloria Charlene “Char” Smith of Wellsburg, WV; daughter, Alicia “Lisa” Myers (Scott) also of Wellsburg, WV; 3 granddaughters that he adored, always telling them how pretty they were, Brionna Myers of Bethany, WV, and Allie and Paige Myers of Wellsburg, WV; his older brother, Richard Smith (Donna) of Wellsburg, WV; several nieces and nephews, and 3 canine companions, Harley, Ben and Pearl.

Thomas’ giving nature was true to the end, as he selflessly donated his body to the WVU Human Gift Registry for research and training at the WVU School of Medicine. A private memorial dinner in Tom’s honor will be held at his family’s convenience. Donations in memory of Tom may be made to Bruins Helping Bruins c/o Brooke County Community PTSA, 10 Bruin Drive, Wellsburg, WV 26070.
