william carl

William Russell Carl, 88, passed away peacefully on the evening of September  22, 2024, at the Stone Pear Pavilion in Chester. Born on March 1, 1936, in Avella, PA, he was one of four children born to Earl and Irene Craig Carl.

A 1954 graduate of Avella High School, William was affectionately remembered in his yearbook as a man with “brains and brawn.” He served as a Weirton Steel (WSX) train engineer for 32 years, demonstrating a strong work ethic and commitment throughout his career.

On April 6, 1957, William married the love of his life, Carrie Brautigam, and they shared a remarkable 67 years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and service to others.

William was a kind man of deep faith, who often sought to share his love for scripture with fellow residents at the Stone Pear Pavilion. His faith was the foundation of his life, guiding him in his many roles as a devoted husband, father, and friend.

Outside of work and family, William was a Master Gardener in Hancock County, nurturing both plants and relationships in his community. He also had a deep passion for music, particularly barbershop harmony. He was an active member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA), serving as president of his local chapter and delighting many with his vocal talents.

A proud member of the 25-Year Club at Weirton Steel, past president of the Washington County Fireman’s Association, and well-known for teaching bible study for over fifty years. William’s leadership and dedication to service were well-known. His strong character and selflessness left an enduring mark on everyone who knew him.

In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his brother Ivan Carl and his niece Maryann Carl.

William is survived by his beloved wife, Carrie, his sons W. Darrell (Diana Lynn) Carl of Weirton, David Earl Carl of Weirton, and step-grandsons, James and Brandon Myers, and step-great-granddaughter Laney Myers, brothers John (Debra) Carl of Avella, PA. and Riley Carl of Hickory, PA., his dear Cousin David L. Carl and his favorite four-legged friend, Sofie.

Friends can visit with William’s family on Wednesday, from 3 – 7 pm at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV., where funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday.

Pastor Dennis Arnold will officiate.

Burial will follow immediately in Independence Cemetery, Independence, PA.

  2. Candle Selection 5I’m going to miss talking to Bill. Enjoyed his wit, hearing about the family that he loved, the garden and landscaping, chatting about previous acquaintances and the countryside of western PA. A kind, gentle man of which there should be more.
    Love,
    Cousin David Carl

  3. Candle Selection 7May Bill Rest-In-Peace. I had the great pleasure to sing with Bill as a fellow Barbershopper with the Ohio Valley Harmonizers and remember fondly his musical talent, but most especially, his friendship and great kindness. I regret that I was not able to make it to the funeral home, but I do want to express my condolences to the family. Bill lived the Ideal “Keep the whole World Singing”!
