Carmela V. "Carrie" Gilkey of Weirton, WV, a sweet and caring girl, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 9, 2020. She was 45.
Carrie was born on in Weirton, WV, on February 7, 1975, the firstborn daughter to Paul A. and Rosemary Zorbino Gilkey.
She grew up on Marland Heights in Weirton and graduated from Brooke High School in 1993, where her love of English led her to join the yearbook and newspaper staff. She continued her academic studies at West Virginia University, where she earned two Master's degrees and was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity.She remained an avid WVU fan her entire life.
After graduation, Carrie taught English and was also a reading specialist at West Allegheny High School. In her late twenties, Carrie began to suffer from debilitating migraines, a condition she had to endure for nearly twenty years. This condition forced her into early retirement from the school system.
Carrie can be described as chatty, never meeting a stranger. As a young girl, she kept the neighbors in the know, never passing up the opportunity to strike up a conversation.
In her free time, she enjoyed reading, watching reality television, and enjoying a meal at Dragon Palace or Chico Fiesta. She adored her niece and nephew and her cat Gracie.
Carrie was a member of Saint Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Weirton, The Migraine Intervention Support Group and the National Education Association.
On May 7, 2012, Carrie was preceded in death by her father, Paul A. Gilkey.
She will be remembered with love by her mother, Rosemary Zorbino Gilkey, her sister, Deanna, and Eric Schmuck; her niece and nephew, Ethan and Delaney Schmuck; her aunts, uncles, and many cousins.
Visitation will be 6-8 PM Tuesday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, where Liturgy of the Word services will be held 10 AM Wednesday.
For public safety, social distancing and face coverings will be required.
Interment will follow at Saint Paul's Cemetery.
Carries family would like to thank Dr. David Watson of WVU Medicine for all the care he provided Carrie through the years and never giving up on trying to find relief for her migraines.

I am so incredibly sorry to learn of Carrie’s passing. I can still see that sweet, beautiful young girl as she was in my class at Edgewood School. She was kind to everyone and, I am sure, will be terribly missed. Sandi Anderson

Carrie always wanted to please others and never wanted anyone to be mad at her. I remember in high school when she would use a couple sprays of my hairspray and tell me she would buy me a whole bottle to replace it. I remember all the times she came to the house and we hung out at my pool, listened to music, and got sunburned. It’s sad to think that so much of her adult life was spent in pain and dealing with multiple physical health problems. Rest in peace. You will forever be in my heart. Love you! -Amy Guthrie

I will always remember Carrie with her laugh. If I slept over at her house or she slept over my house. We would always be sitting there laughing. She was a friend that could always cheer you up just with her silly ways and giggles. I will never forget you carrie. You were one of my dearest friend in high school. I just seen you at Walmart not to long ago and we both said we’re going to make plans for a lunch get together to catch up on everything. We never did. And how I wish we did. I met Carrie through my daughter, Jodi, when they were students at WVU. We were fortunate enough to meet Carrie’s family on graduation day in 1997. We shared a nice dinner with Carrie and her family at Garfield’s restaurant. What a sad day it is to lose someone so young. She was a very sweet person and fun to be around.
