Daniel J. Vance, 85, of Weirton, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at the Weirton Medical Center. He was born October 11, 1916 in Steubenville, OH, the youngest of the eight children of Yovo (John) Vujnovic and Narancha (Anna) Milanovic Vujnovic. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his father when Dan was 14 years old and his mother in 1963; his wife, Kathryn, on February 22, 2001; four brothers, Nick, Sam, George, and Milan Vance; and two sisters, Mary Ann Vance and Helen Tully. Dan was an All-State high school basketball champion at Weir High School. He received a full scholarship from Pitt University and balanced sports and study with a full time job at Weirton Steel. After graduating in 1940 with a B.S. degree in Chemistry, Dan enlisted in the Army when WWII broke out. He served as a Captain for four years in combat campaigns all over Italy and Germany. After the war, he joined the Army Reserves, and in 1962 was promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel. On October 30, 1949, he married Kathryn Zinaich, and the two of them owned and operated the first one-hour dry cleaning service in Weirton, Mary Ann Dry Cleaners on Pennsylvania Avenue. They also owned a laundromat and another branch of the dry cleaners on Main Street. After their retirement, Dan opened the first Domino’s Pizza in Weirton. Dan was a member of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, VFW, American Legion, Pitt University Alumni Association, AARP, and a life member of the Reserve Officer’s Association. He is survived by his two daughters, Nancy Vance Jacobs of Avella, PA, and Dana Vance Gauthier of Brooklyn, NY, and his two sons-in-law, Joseph Jacobs and Frank Gauthier. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 PM Monday at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Additional visitation will be from 12 Noon until time of funeral services at 1 PM Tuesday at the Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, Steubenville, OH. Burial will follow at the Holy Resurrection Serbian Cemetery, Steubenville, where military graveside services will be performed by the American Legion Post 10, Veterans of Foreign Wars 2716, and the Tri-State Marine Corps. A Pomen service will be held 7:30 PM Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, 528 N. 4th Street, Steubenville, OH 43952, or the Salvation Army, 794 Cove Road, Weirton, WV 26062.
