dr. carolina torres
Carolina Manzano Torres, MD Carolina died peacefully on September 17, 2015 at her home in Weirton, West Virginia. She was born in Manila, the Philippines, in 1940, the child of Daniel and Ursula Manzano. She had 2 siblings, Encarnita and Daniel Jr. As a child her favorite pastimes were competitive games like Chess, Marbles, and Jacks. She also knew from an early age that she wanted to be a physician. Through her teen years, she honed a skill for research and love for learning. At the age of 21, she was graduated from Medical School at University of Santo Tomas and ranked in the top 10 of Medical Board of Licensure in the Philippines. At university she met, married, and is survived by her faithful loving husband of 51 years, Dr. Luis (Ben) P. Torres of Weirton, WV. They moved to America in 1969 to raise their family. Ben and Carolina have three children, Luis Jr., Hector, and Tanya. They have three beautiful grandchildren, Alexander, Isabella, and Joey. To her family and close friends, she was known for her strength, caring and great moral character. Carolina has left behind a legacy of lifelong learning, love of the arts, respect for cultural diversity, zeal for travel, courage to excel, and generosity of service to those in need. Perhaps her greatest legacy is what she imparted to her children: the drive to succeed, compassion to care for others and gratitude for blessings that we receive. Her spirit lives on in the many lives she touched and she will be missed greatly. A mass celebrating her life will be held at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Weirton, WV on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 1:00 PM.

  5. To Dr. Torres’ Family: I am so sorry for your loss. I know she is in a better place buy it hurts to know that she had to suffer so much before she passed. I am also sorry that you had to endure this with her. Your wife/mother came into my life at a critical time. As a young working mother it was hard to divide myself. The work atmosphere was such that my friend Barb and I were almost dared to take a day off for a sick child or need a break at work because we were tired. Dr. Torres came in and took care of that situation. She expected us to give our all at work but understood family emergencies and was so kind when we were pregnant. She was experiencing this herself. She was a champion for the working mother. She was so intelligent and a great educator. She improved our anesthesia department greatly. Without judgment she taught us all and updated our skills and department practices. In a short time our department far surpassed any anesthesia department in the area. I loved it that this little mighty person intimidated the “old guard” of doctors that were practicing when she came to town. She far surpassed them in medical knowledge and they didn’t know what she was talking about half the time. They tried to take her to task for ordering so many “new” pre-op lab tests on their patients. They thought they were unnecessary but soon learned who was in command. She made my professional life a pleasure. I left Trinity before she did due to illness but I never forgot about her. She has a lasting place in my heart. She was an intelligent, kind and giving person and she loved all of you very much. Even though she expected a lot from her children, her worry for your futures and her love were always up front for all to see. It is comforting to know that when it is my turn to pass your wife/mom and my best friend Barb will be there to greet me. They are probably talking together now. With Love, Pam

  6. Dear Dr. Torres and family, Our deepest sympathy for the passing of our dear friend friend Lina. We will be praying for her and for your family and will offer a mass at the Missionary Oblates at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, IL. Sincerely, Oscar and Ada Abrigo

  7. I am the eldest daughter of Leopoldo Torres Chavez and Marie M. Chavez. My dad was Tio Ben’s first cousin. I remember fondly how much fun I had with Tio Ben, Tia Lina and their two boys during our summer trip to Baguio in 1968. Tio Aciong and Tia Leoning hosted our vacation. Tia Lina was very nice to me during the whole time. Also, she had a lot of energy taking care of her rambunctious boys, but they were so adorable and cute in their tomahawk haircut! Tio Ben, may you find consolation in the loving care of your family and friends, and may you be profoundly comforted that Tia Lina is now in the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  8. Dear Dr. Luis Torres, My wife and i send our deepest condolence and sympathy on the death of your wife, Dr.Lina Torres. I can feel the same grief and loss of your dearest wife, as i also lose my first wife,Linda, who died in 2012 so suddenly. We will missed her and Lina’s memory will live on with her love ones. Take care and give me a call if i can be of help during your hours of bereavement. Drs. Nemy & Cecilia Bucayu
