Edmund "Wyp" Wypasek, 86, of Weirton passed away Wednesday September 21, 2016, at the Dixon Nursing Home in Wintersville, OH. Born on June 26, 1930, in Pittsburgh, PA, Edmund was a son of the late Frank and Sophie Kukuwa Wypasek; He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Andrew and Frank; and his two sisters, Julia Biela and Mary Balog. Edmund graduated Weir High School in 1948, where he was selected to play in the WV All Star game against Ohio All Stars, but had to miss the game because he enlisted in the US Army to serve in the Korean Conflict. He met his wife, when he would return home on leave, and the two were married on June 20, 1953. When they were first married, and started their family, Edmund worked at Stark Van Lines making 95 cents an hour. He later was hired at Weirton Steel where he worked for 38 years retiring one month prior to his 60th birthday. He retired as an operator on the Tin Mill's side trimmers. In his retirement years he enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities. He could be found watching their football, baseball, cheerleading, and recitals. He also was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, where he was a former Eucharistic Minister, Knights of Columbus 3734, VFW 2716, and the Weirton Steel 25 Year Club. He is survived by his wife, Sophie Baranowski Wypasek; his four sons, David, Ronnie and Mark (Cindy) of Weirton, and Edmund and his companion, Elizabeth) of Columbus, OH; his seven grandchildren, Jessica Gregory (Travis), Alison Eckalberry (Mark), Courtney, Stefanie, Brittany, Jake and Zak Wypasek; and his three great grandchildren, Sophie and Penelope Gregory, and Kaden Wypasek. Visitation will be 3- to 7 PM Friday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Saturday at Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, Weirton.Rev. Fr. Tony Thurston will preside.Interment will follow at Saint Paul's Cemetery, Weirton with military honors conducted by the US Army and the American Legion Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church or to the American Diabetes Association, or Saint Jude's Children Research Hospital. From the backyard chats to gardening with my father he always had such a calm, friendly and helpful presence. David, I do remember one time when he lost it after we extended the front tire of your bike with forks;-). I hope that your many happy memories help you through this most difficult time.
