Elizabeth Ann “Bettie” Barney Williamson, a loving mother grandmother and great grandmother passed away at her home on January 11, 2022. She was 97. Bettie was born in Keyser, WV on December 7, 1924; the youngest of two children born to Harry William and Nellie Pauline Michael West. When Bettie was a year old her parents gave her to her aunt and uncle to raise. Bettie grew up in Cumberland, Maryland. At the age of 18, her aunt passed away, and Bettie moved back to Keyser, WV. While she was working at a drug store in Keyser, she met Albert A. “Poke” Barney, who was attending Potomac State College on the G.I Bill. Bettie and Albert were married and were blessed with two children. Albert was a State Trooper with the West Virginia State Police, which had them moving around the State of West Virginia. The family eventually settled in Weirton. Initially, Bettie worked as a teller at the Weirton Savings and Loan. She then became a legal assistant with Attorney Leonard Tost. She also taught shorthand at Wheeling College and was a sales rep for Avon. Eventually she retired from Smith Kline Beechum. Socially, Bette enjoyed many social activities with the Osiris Shrine. Albert Barney passed away in 1990 and Bettie married Robert Williamson in 1994. Sadly, Robert passed away on October 11, 1999. Most of all Bettie will be remembered as a kind, sweet, highly intelligent, and energetic lady whose was beautiful inside and out. She will always be a part of Weirton trivia. When Bettie was younger, she won a contest to name the new bowling alley in town. Her winning entry that she submitted was “Holiday Lanes.” She was a member of the Colliers Methodist Church and was the former president of the local AARP Chapter. In addition to her parents and her husbands, Bettie was preceded in death by her Aunt Carrie, and her brother, Harry William “Billy” West, II. She will be remembered with love by her son, Scott (Lori) Barney and her daughter, Alice Woods; her step-son, Kevin Williamson; her two grandchildren, Megan (Dustin) Madison and Richie (Vicki Westlake) Woods; her great grandchildren, Tavian Woods and Charlie Ann and Emma Madison; and her niece, Kathy Andrews. Bettie wishes were to be cremated and her cremated remains to be placed with family. In life, Bettie was always fond of Saint Jude’s Hospital. 2. My mom, Lois Westover, was friends with Bettie, many years ago…Lil Ruszcowski, Joyce Simpson, Helen Alongi and Bettie brought my mom a clock for a house warming gift when we moved to Orr Street….my sister has the clock hanging in her house now. Mom & dad were on the same trip to Cape Cod with Bettie and Bob. Lots of good memories… I met Bettie many years later… She was such a great person and I know she will be missed. 🙏🏻

  3. In tribute to ‘Mrs. Barney’, she was a truly unforgettable, kind, caring treasure of the old Edgewood neighborhood so many years ago and everything beyond. Coming from a “bowling family”, after my mother told me of the contest she won naming Holiday Lanes, I shared that bit of Weirton trivia every chance I got! If only the world had more like her! May she sleep in heavenly peace. Most sincerely, Kathy (Paboucek) Alatis
