florence hirkala
Florence Ann Hirkala of Weirton passed away Monday, December 20, 2021, in the Weirton Medical Center. She was 94 years old. She was born June 28, 1927, in Mingo Junction, OH, a daughter of the late John J. and Anna Jakub Grantonic. Florence was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hirkala, who died April 17, 1970, whom she married in 1951; brothers George F. and Thomas Grantonic and sister Mary Agnes Matthews. Florence was a member of the 1945 graduating class of Steubenville Catholic Central. She retired with over 44 years working as a stenographer/clerk for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, and Conrail. A pillar of the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, Florence attended daily mass, assisted with the Lenten Fish Fry, served lunches at St. Paul School, and was an active member of the Christian Mothers. Father often referred Florence, Mrs. Canala, and Ms. Pete as a part of the Holy Trinity. So very proud of her Slovak heritage, she wants to be remembered as a “hard-working ole Slovak.” Florence was always happy and lent a smile to anyone she met. She loved to travel and, as of March 2018, Florence had traveled to Europe 7 times. Florence is survived by her brothers John Grantonic of Youngstown, OH., Edward Grantonic of Mingo Junction, OH., special nephew Timothy J. Rowland, and two very special nieces Cari Anne Nice and Patricia Hans, and loved by many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Wednesday, 5-8 pm at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am Thursday at St Paul Roman Catholic Church. The Reverend Father Babu Joseph Elamturuthil will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Paul Cemetery. Please consider a memorial contribution to St. Paul Grade School 140 Walnut Street, Weirton, WV., 26062. 1. This picture sat on Aunt Flo’s’s buffet ever since I can remember. I always thought she looked like a Slovak Betty White….. A beautiful woman, with a beautiful heart and stubborn as they come. You will be missed Aunt Flo. Oh…. And she made the best Texas sheet cake.

  2. I never even thought about Aunt Flo passing. I thought she’d outlive us all. From her birthday lunch in 2018. God didn’t skimp when He made Aunt Florence. He spent extra time and added extra Godliness to her. She will be sadly missed but we will see her again at the resurrection. See you later, Aunt Flo.

  3. Sending hugs and prayers to everyone. We will miss you Aunt Flo ! Love, Michelle (Koper), Lauren and Lindsey, Eric Koper and Catharina T Suryaatmad

  4. Flo Hirkala is a pillar in our community. I just saw her at last weeks Mass. it will be very different without seeing her at Mass and at St Paul’s Church activities. At least we all know she’s in Heaven. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends

  5. The descendants of sisters Anna “Jakub“ Grantonic and Mary “Jakub“ Gerba were many. Florence Hirkala was one of those extraordinary relatives. She was well known for her cheerful nature and good humor. Her positive attitude always made everyone feel welcomed. “Cheerful laughter in the air A light in the sky that makes you stare A gentle breeze and warmth of love It is FLORENCE, at home with GOD above.” The Lord has added another bright light in the sky this Christmas season as we warmly remember Florences’s cheerful nature and a million-dollar smile. Rest in HIS tender care, Dear cousin! John Gerba, Robert and Mary Sleeman, Gary and Donna Sleeman
