George Volosin

George Volosin, age 93, passed away November 19, 2016 in Georgetown, SC. Born December 21, 1922, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary Fedor Volosin. Mr. Volosin was also predeceased by his wife, Joan R. Volosin in 2001, an infant brother, an infant sister, brothers Charles, John, Pete, Andrew and Joe Volosin and sister Ann Granger.
He is survived by two daughters, Janice Payne and Judith Burow; grandchildren, Christopher George Payne, Stephanie Sara Joe Payne, Randall Jason Burow; great grandchild, Ethan Robert James Payne; brother Mike Volosin and sisters Mary Evans and Helen Orenzuk.
George graduated from Weir High School in Weirton, WV. He served his country as a Corporal in the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific during World War II and was one of the few remaining World War II veterans at the time of his passing.
George was an extraordinary athlete at a young age and loved sports. He learned to play golf while caddying at Williams Country Club in Weirton. He played college football before transferring to Glenville State College in WV to play golf which became his life and passion.
He served as a Golf Professional in Elkins, WV; California; Kentucky; Green Hills Country Club in Fairmont, WV; Sandy Brae in Clendenin, WV; and retired from Cherry Point Marine Base Golf Course in Havelock, NC. He supervised the building of Green Hills and Sandy Brae golf courses.
George was known as an exceptional golf instructor and played in many golf tournaments around the country as a young professional. He played with the legend Sam Snead in an exhibition in Elkins, WV. His love of the game was passed to his daughters and grandchildren with daughters playing competitively and grandson Jason Burow ranked in the Houston Junior Golf Association. His athletic abilities were passed on to his grandson Chris Payne who was a talented baseball player, and granddaughter Stephanie Payne who played softball at Presbyterian College in SC.
George was a lifetime member of the Professional Golf Association. His love of golf is his legacy.
George practiced the Russian Orthodox Faith and attended church whenever he could. He often could be seen reading from the Orthodox prayer book.
A Parastas service will be celebrated at 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home followed by burial at Saint Nicholas Orthodox Cemetery.
