Hugh H. Manley

Hugh H. Manley of Weirton, a retired educator and coach passed away on Monday October 11, 2021, after a recent battle with COVID-19. He was 91.
Hugh was born on October 6, 1930 in Weirton, WV, one of four children born to Hugh H. and Theodora Marie Terrell Manley.
Hugh graduated from Weir High School in 1949, where he played football for four years and was elected the first President of the Key Club. After Weir High, he played football for four years at West Liberty State College. He served his country in the United States Army. He received his Master’s degree at West Virginia University.
In 1957 he met Phyllis Ann Thomas and they were married on November 21, 1958. In their 58 years of marriage, they were blessed with four children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Hugh taught and coached at Brilliant High School and Weir High School. The majority of his career was in the Hancock County School system, where he was a teacher, coach and principal. He retired with over 25 years of service, having coached many future Division 1 college and professional football players.
Hugh was a member of Cove Presbyterian Church, where he served as a member of the Session and taught Sunday school. He also was a member of the Brilliant High School Hall of Fame and Weirton AF & AM Weirton Lodge 171.
In his retirement years, Hugh enjoyed traveling and he cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Hugh was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis Ann Thomas Manley on March 13, 2017; his brother, Vincent known as Keith.
He will be remembered with love by his sons Donald and Mark (Josette) Manley; his daughters Ruthann (John) Eckersberg and Suzann (Derek) Stewart; his brother William Manley, his sister Wanda Fiscus, his grandchildren, Jacqueline (Jon) Shafeei, Elizabeth (Christian) Whittle, Ethan and Bryce Manley, John and Adam Eckersberg, Robert (Ann Marie) Busick; and Nichole Felouzis; Sophia Dermargosian; Christian and Liam Stewart; his great-grandchildren Mila, Robby and Stella.
Visitation will be 2-4pm and 6-8pm, Friday, October 15 at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV.
Additional visitation will be Saturday, October 16 at 10:00am until the time of services at 11:00am at Cove Presbyterian Church at 3404 Main Street, Weirton, WV.
Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, 1720 Sunset Boulevard, Steubenville, Ohio.

Had Driver’s Education with Mr. Manley, he was brave enough to sit next to all us inexperienced drivers. I also worked for him over two summers at the swimming pool. He taught a strong work ethic. I’m sure he will be missed.

Fondest memories of Mr. Manley when he managed Marland Hghts Pool and would let the McCaig and Townsend families swim on Sunday before the pool opened to the public….we had so much fun and he would come up and chat with all of us. My deepest sympathy to the family. Gary and Becky McCaig
What an honor to have known Coach Manley! He was part of those “wonder” years at Weir when athletes and plain ole students respected him. My mother was part of his family, working for him helping his wife and their kids. Coach and I talked often and had lunch during some of my visits to Weirton – He will be truly missed! So sad to hear of Uncle Hugh’s passing. Living “out West,” we didn’t get to know him well, which is our loss. But every time we saw him, Hugh was funny, warm and welcoming. We’d have loved to have him as a coach!
