jimmy kum
Harry James "Jimmy" Kum, 68, who was as much a part of the fabric of Weirton as making steel, died Tuesday March 1, 2011 at the Weirton Medical Center. Born on July 3, 1942 in Steubenville, OH, Jimmy was a son of the late Rosemond and Ida Dewitt Kum. Known as Weirton's number one fan, Jimmy retired from Starvaggi Industries. His passion in life was sports. He followed the Pittsburgh Steelers and the West Virginia Mountaineers but nothing compared to his beloved Weir High Red Riders and his Weirton Madonna Blue Dons. In an instance, he knew if you were a Red Rider, a Blue Don, a Golden Bear or a Brooke Bruin. He rarely missed a game in the last fifty years and never missed an opportunity to kiss a pretty girl. Very patriotic, his favorite time of year was, no doubt, the Fourth of July, where he enjoyed leading the parade down Main Street. Jimmy is survived by his brother, Larry Kum of Weirton; two sisters, Nancy Kum of Weirton and Barbara Snyder and her husband, Darrell of Arlington, VA; a nephew Darrell Snyder and his wife Rebeccah; two great nephews, Elijah and Ari Snyder all of Chambersburg, PA. Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-8pm Thursday at the Greco- Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, where funeral services will be held 1pm Friday. The Reverend Father Dean Borgmeyer and Pastor Judy Jerman will preside. Carrie Oliver will be the minister of song and music. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Weirton, WV. Memorial contributions in Jimmy's memory may be made to the Weirton Area Ambulance and Rescue Squad, 1305 Pennsylvania Avenue, Weirton, WV 26062 or Weir High School C/O Main Office, 100 Red Rider Road, Weirton, WV 26062 or Weirton Madonna High School, 150 Michael Way, Weirton, WV 26062

  5. Barbara, Nancy, Larry It was with saddness when I read about Jimmy’s death. I lived on Terrace Heights which is where Jimmy lived and he always watched over us. When my mom passed away in 1993 Jimmy was walking down pennsylvania avenue to come to the funeral and he thought the service was an hour later and as we were going up the hill in the limo we saw jimmy and I wanted to pick him up but instead a good friend of my dads picked him up and he came to the wake. He was visibly upset as I was and he told me he felt good when he saw my mom and dad. He will truly be missed as he was loved by many. My prayers are with you during this most difficult time. Peggy Barnabei Kula

  6. To the family of Jimmy Kum – although I never met any of you personally, I wanted to let you know how highly Jimmy spoke of his family each and every time I gave him a ride in town. I am a 1978 Weir High marching band alum and will fondly remember Jimmy following us around Terrace Heights during practice in the summer, as well as from the Community Center and up Main Street to the football field during home games. No matter how old I got, I was always, “Hey Weir High – pretty girl.” I also remember how proud Jimmy was during the years he worked. The City of Weirton has lost a sweet, gentle soul, who will forever be remembered in the hearts of many. We pray for you all during this time of loss and know for sure Heaven has received an angel. God bless – Kay Fenske

  23. To Jimmy’s Family – you have our deepest sympathy on the loss of your brother. When I think of Jimmy, I am a young girl growing up on Terrace Heights watching him walking to work carrying his black lunch box. Back in the 60’s, graduation parties were held at home and he would attend all of them. He always called the girls in the neighborhood sweetheart and pretty girl pretty girl. When I got married and moved back to Terrace Heights, Jimmy was the first one to welcome me “home”. I will miss seeing Jimmy on my evening walks and I will miss him standing at the old TV cable yelling woo hoo at 4:30 in the morning. Little did he know, he was my alarm clock. Looks like I’ll have to stop at the store tomorrow and buy one. Dearest Jimmy, as you had welcomed me back home all those years ago, I know the Good Lord is welcoming YOU home as well. I moved away for a brief time but upon returning to Weirton I would give Jimmy rides again with my son (now 9) who now also knows how much Jimmy meant to everyone in Weirton. God Bless Jimmy and the Kum Family. Debbie, Greg and Evan Boniti

  107. Dear Nancy, Larry, Barb and Family: To see all the wonderful tributes to your brother Jimmy speaks volumes of what the people of Weirton truly feel about the loss of such a special person. He obviously has touched so many lives in one way or another. My husband Michael “Mugsy” worked with Jimmy at Starvaggi’s and has many fond work-related memories, as well as memories of growing up on Terrace Heights. Michael and I have had the pleasure of Jimmy’s company on many occasions over the years, whether seeing him at Convenient or at different social and sporting events. We also had the opportunity to give him a ride here and there, and he was always so entertaining that we would be uplifted by his enthusiasm. We are deeply saddened by Jimmy’s passing, as is my mother, Helen Barnabei, who has known Jimmy for years and was with us on many of those rides. We will miss Jimmy!! May God be with you in your time of sorrow. Michael and Kathy Ballato and Helen Barnabei

Now that I have a family, I’m glad my wife and children were fortunate enough to meet him. My wife isn’t from here, but he still called her “Weir High Cheerleader”! You will be missed! Thanks for the memories Jimmy. Dan,Jackie,Austin,Selena,Xavier

Now you have to watch over all of us in Weirton!

  112. I smile every time I think of Jimmy. He was always so kind. In the early 80’s, I was one of his “Weir High Pretty Girls” no matter where he saw me. I loved his enthusiasm for his Weir High Red Riders and the band. He will be missed. I am proud to say that Jimmy Kum made a difference in my life and I am proud of my hometown for taking such good care of him. It has been a long time since I have seen Jimmy. When I see him again, it will be at Heaven’s gate. I can only imagine the parade with Jimmy as God’s cheerleader. Rest in Peace, Jimmy! Those of us from Weirton will miss you!

I will miss that infectious smile and hearing those words, “Weir High Pretty Girls” along with that gentle kiss on the cheek. I remember my family providing Jimmy with a drink when he was thirsty, a dinner when he was hungry and a ride home when his feet hurt from walking all day. He touched more people’s lives than he will ever know! Jimmy was EVERYWHERE. I will miss seeing him when I am in town visiting family and friends. My heart goes out to his family during this difficult time. Weirton will NOT be the same! I was glad to hear Weirton paid tribute to him on WTOV9 news. RIP Jimmy. You will be truly missed!

  115. When I heard that Jimmy had passed, I was in shock and am still numb. Jimmy used to sit on the corner behind our home on South 11th Street. He waved at every car that passed and never failed to yell, “Yeah Weir High!” He was a die hard fan that was loyal to the end. He will be greatly missed. It is seldom we meet someone who leaves a lasting impression on our minds and hearts. Jimmy was someone who not only leaves that memory but I will always hear his voice as he cheers for his favorite team. I hope they leave a seat dedicated to him at the new stadium. We will miss you Jim…………..

  116. Weirton has lost a true community symbol and a constant thread that has obviously touched so many. Jimmy had a special talent of making everyone he spoke with feel they were important and he was truly their biggest fan. I will never forget being in a game and hearing his cheers above the crowd, “Let’s GO LoLo!” He has been an inspiration to all and a great blessing to the community. He always put a smile on my face with his generous waves, exuberant cheers and bear hugs. His presence will be missed by many! I can just see him right now waving and cheering us on from above! 122. I remember seeing Jimmy for the first time when I visited my grandparents on terrace heights back in the ’60’s. What I remember then about him was the “hey pretty girl” he would say to those stopping in at the Rider Mart. I’ve since gotten to know Jimmy, he was kind-hearted to both friend and stranger. He loved the local schools and their sports. He even called my wife “Brooke” everytime he saw her. Weirton was blessed to have someone like Jimmy as a resident. He was special, and will be missed. R.I.P. Jimmy. Thanks for the memories. Our condolences to Jimmys’ family.

  123. You will be missed, Jimmy. You always called me “Weir High Cheerleader”. I never was a cheerleader, but you never believed me. You would just laugh and move along. The streets of Weirton Heights have lost a soulmate, but the streets of heaven have gained one. Love & prayers to your family.

  124. I would like to share a great story about Jimmy, When I was a senior in High School, I played basketball for the Blue Dons, during one of the games I was at the foul line for a big pair of free throws. The entire gym was silent. As I prepaired to shoot my first of two shots Jimmy yelled out “MY COUSIN MIKE” while holding up my senoir picture and kissing my photo. The entire gym errupted with laughter. He was a Weirton icon and will be sorely missed by all.

  133. My heart aches for the Kum family. Jimmy was as genuine as they come. I’ll always remember how he cheered for the Weir High Band and always complimented the pretty girls. There has never been a greater fan than Jimmy. I’m sure we will hear him cheering from heaven. May God be with your family at this time.

  134. Jimmy was a gentle soul and now that soul will be walking around Heaven shouting out Go Blue Dons or Go Weir High and hey pretty girl to all of those from Weirton who have gone before us. In a world where we have been told to be wary of strangers, Jimmy was one you could always trust. Thank you Kum family for sharing your brother and uncle with us. 140. My favorite memory of Jimmy was from quite a few years ago. I was driving up Pennsylvania Ave. and Jimmy was on the side of the road trying to get a ride. So I pulled over to offer him a ride and he replied by saying, “No thanks, I’m not getting in your truck. I have a suit on for the funeral home.” Rest peacefully Jimmy. Domenick Tonacchio

  141. So sad to hear about Jimmy. Everyone knew him and loved him. My Dad drove School Bus for 30 years for Weir High and Madonna. We got to know him well. Now they are together in Heaven. Dad on his bus hauling the Angel’s football team and Jimmy yelling to the Angel Cheerleaders..Pretty girls.

  152. Awe, my heart dropped when I heard the news. Back when I was a freshman, Jimmy said to me, “Go Blue Don cheerleader; pretty girl”. A year later, I seen him in McDonald’s, he kissed my hand and said, “Go Blue Dons”. When I told him that I was now a WEIR High Red Rider, he said, “No, Blue Don”. Though I graduated from Weir, I will always be Jimmy’s Blue Don/Red Rider girl. Even when I didn’t feel very pretty or our team lost, Jimmy’s compliments would brighten my day. I remember as a little girl, passing him on Pennsylvania Avenue. He was dressed in a suit, walking to church every Sunday in the heat, rain, or snow. I truly admired that about Jimmy, and regret not ever telling him. Jimmy always had that REAL JOY down in his heart. THANK YOU JIMMY FOR BEING WEIRTON’S #1 FAN FOR 68 YEARS!

  173. Jimmy”s family, It was very shocking to hear of his passing. I am alumni of the weir high band from ’94-’97. He was a part of my high school years thru the band. he was one of us. And a legend in Weirton. He had a kind heart. Allthough He never knew my real name, (he called me ” Weir High Band”) he never failed to say hi. Even untill a few weeks before his passing.

  174. Dear Barbara, Nancy, Larry & family, You know, I never thought of the day that Jimmy would no longer be on Terrace Heights. He was always there while I was growing up and always there whenever Bill and I would come back to town. So very sad for me to think of that! And yet, as I read all the condolences, I realize that he IS still there, even MORE so than ever, as his spirit and love is shinning through us all. He taught us so much when he was alive and we didn’t even realize it as much as we do now that he is gone to be with The Lord. What a wonderful world it would be if we could all live our lives as he did, and as your family did in loving him and teaching him so very much. Please know that all of us, no matter how far away we are, will always remember Jimmy. We hope and pray that we can follow his beautiful example of a ‘Life Well Lived’! Shortly after moving to Heights St. almost 3 yrs ago, I was on my way to work and saw this guy standing in the rain, so I picked him up and gave him a ride, that was the first time I met Jimmy. The thing I remember the most about him was when the radio station would play the National Anthem at 7 am, he would always say it was his favorite song. He would always tell me when it was sketty wednesday, he loved his sisters sewer pipes..lol. I will miss picking him up.We are glad we got to know him, we will always remember Weirs legend.

  187. If their were more Jimmy Kum,s in the world, their would be no need for armies, for their would be no wars, I will forever miss you buddy, your neighbor.

  188. I grew up knowing Jimmy and have many stories but my favorite probably came as an adult. At the time, my future sister-in-law who was from Philadelphia, encountered Jimmy in Sheetz. She was with my brother but they were not together inside the store. My brother heard her calling for him. Jimmy had sought her out and knew she wasn’t from town. Not quite sure how to react to him, she was a little nervous. When my brother found her and saw who it was, he simply said, “oh, that’s Jimmy. He’s harmless. How’s it goin’ Jimmy?” and then walked away. Is there a greater tribute to a man than for another man to leave his nervous fiance with him and continue shopping? Jimmy simply had a job to do and that was to scout out this new person in town. Thanks Jimmy for never knowing a stranger. My drive to work in the morning will not be the same without seeing you sitting on the WAARS bench nor will the end of my workday be the same without seeing you on my way into Convenient.

  189. Growing up in Weirton I cannot recall an event of any kind where one would not see Jimmy. He loved the city and everything about it. We should all be so lucky to have a legacy of love and kindness like the one Jimmy leaves behind.

He could always cheer you up when you were down. the people of Weirton always looked out after Jimmy like he was one of their own children and he will be missed forever and will never be forgotten. How can you ever attend a Weir High football or basketball game again & not look for Jimmy? But don’t worry, he’ll still be cheering us on in heaven & I’m sure will convert all the other angel up there by cheering”Yeah Weir High”

  196. Anyone that knows anything about Weirton knew Jimmy. Had you ever seen him in a bad mood? He loved life and he loved sports and pretty girls (even if they weren’t pretty, he called them that). It will be hard not seeing him on the side of the road waving to anyone that would wave back. If he was done talking to you he would wave his hand toward you and say, “Get outta here!” He meant no harm. He just wanted to talk but NEVER took up a lot of one’s time. One of Weirton’s Icons is gone but far from forgotten. He will be missed by a lot of people. Even the ones who didn’t know him or talk to him. Rest in peace, Jimmy, and cheer for your favorite team from up above.

  221. Jimmy was “man about town” when I was growing up in Weirton. He was always the 1st one there for a game, always happy when we won, and always the 1st one to cheer us up after a loss. There was always the next game when we would get them. It was with pride and pleasure that the Weir High Football Team took Jimmy on the team bus to the WV State Championship Game. We played a good game, but ended on the short end of a 10-7 score. Jimmy made the ride home better and helped lead the cheers when the town turned out at midnight to welcome us home. God has called his biggest cheerleader Home. We are all better for having Jimmy Kum touch our lives. Thank you Jimmy.

  222. Jimmy, You touched the hearts of so many people. Coming “home” will be a different place without you. Your “super fan legacy” will be retold for generations as we share the fond memories you created for so many who passed through the doors of Weir High. You will be missed.

  223. Jimmy, you were always so much fun to talk to and loved your devotion to the local high schools., ” Go Weir High! Beat Brooke !” The following year it would be the other way around. He was funny. I had the pleasure of seeing Jimmy near his home while I was hauling asphalt to pave his street not far from the high school. He stood out next to the paver shouting out to the workers making sure the guys were doing a good job.

  224. You will always be missed the spring weather and football season always remind me of you and your great smile and energy
