John C. Village, 89 of Weirton, died August 17, 2002, at the Weirton Medical Center. He was born March 9, 1913 in Steubenville, Ohio, the son of the late George Village Sr. and Rafira Coman Village. His wife Mary Alvin Spiker Village, two brothers George Jr. and Nick Village also preceded him. John was a member of the Oakland United Presbyterian Church and the Community United Methodist Church in Desert Hot Springs, CA. In his long career at Weirton Steel, Mr. Village, who started as an office boy in 1927 in the Strip Steel Dept., progressed steadily upward in management to become Manager-Production planning Dept., in 1962. Subsequently, he was elevated to Assistant to the President at National Steel Corporation and was assigned to special projects. Later, he became Assistant General Superintendent-Operations, at Weirton Division. Mr. Village was extremely knowledgeable about the special materials produced at Weirton Steel for the Defense Department in World War II. He was copper clad coordinator for a time in 1942, and later was assigned special duty at the Louis Marx toy plant on the production of copper clad steel. He was educated at Weir High School, the University Of Virginia Graduate School Of Business Administration, and took a basic advanced management executive course in his steel career. He belonged to many civic organizations including the Weirton Masonic Lodge No. 171, Scottish Rite-Wheeling Consistory, Osiris Shrine Club, and Northern Panhandle Shrine Club, Charter member of the Weirton Moose Lodge No. 688, Ohio Valley Coin Club, and the Williams Country Club. He was past president (1968-1969) of the Ohio Valley Senior Golf Association, and also belonged to the Weirton Steel Management Club, 25-year club, the American Ordnance Association, and the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers. John is survived by a son, John Roger Village of Weirton, three daughters, Nancy Lopez of Palm Springs, Ca, Mrs. William (Gretchen) Starner of Reynoldsburg, OH, Mrs. Gene (Bonnie) Shaiken of Los Osos, Ca. He has eleven grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and one sister Mary Golden of Oceanside, Ca. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 20, 2002, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton where services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, Florence, Pa. with Masonic Graveside Services.
