John J. Varlas, 72, of Weirton, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2008 at the Valley Haven Geriatric Center in Beech Bottom, WV. He was born September 10, 1935 in Weirton. John was preceded in death by his parents and brother Stanley Varlas. Mr. Varlas retired from Weirton Steel where he worked as a clerk in the Tin Mill. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 3734 and K of C Third Degree. John is survived by his wife Betty Johnson Varlas of Weirton, whom he married January 1, 1982; step-sons Art Mancuso II and his wife Ginny of Wheeling, Joe Orecchio and his wife Lucy of Everett, WA, Robert Mancuso, Michael Orecchio and his wife Debi and Chris Orecchio and his wife Dr. Kara O'Karma all of Weirton; step-daughters Bev Ticich and her husband Frank, Annette Krappa and her husband Frank all of Follansbee, WV, Betty DeFelice and her husband B.J. of Weirton and Mary Corsi and her husband Jeff of Columbia, SC; 24 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Friends will be received Sunday 1-3 and 6-8 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. The members of the Knights of Columbus 3734 will recite the rosary at 6 PM Sunday, in the funeral home. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated 10:30 Monday at St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church. Reverend Father Dean Borgmeyer and Reverend Father Douglas Sutton will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Hospice, 10686 State Route 150, Rayland, OH 43943 and Valley Haven Geriatric Center, R. John was one of those unique individuals who comes along every now and then who had the ability to make you think, I didn’t always agree with him but I respected him and I admired the way he stood for what he believed was right. Perhaps had some of his advise been listened to there might still be a Weirton Steel and life would be a whole lot different in Weirton. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
