joseph veltri, sr.
Joseph John Veltri, Sr., of Weirton, WV, a long-standing pillar of Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Weirton died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, August 13, 2021. He was 84. Born on December 20, 1936, in Weirton, WV, Joe was one of four children born to John and Theresa Gazia Veltri. He graduated from Weir High School, and like most graduates went to work in Weirton Steel. He worked there for 39 years before retiring from the cleaning lines in the tin mill. On July 27, 1957, he married Frances Ann “Cookie” Maslowski, they were married for 63 wonderful years until her passing on Tuesday, December 1, 2020. Joe worked hard in the mill but every long weekend he looked forward to spending time with his family. Many weekends they would pack up the car and head to Three Rivers Stadium to catch a doubleheader. If the Buccos were not playing they would spend time at Presque Isle or Tappan Lake. He spent many days teaching his boys how to play baseball in the backyard, and would always critique their games on the car ride home. Joe was loyal and dedicated to whatever he was involved in. You could say “He was all in.” At the Weirton Baseball Association, he volunteered to build the fields and coach, at Madonna High School he was the Booster President, at Saint Paul’s Church he was a faithful and dedicated volunteer on the Bereavement Committee Holy Name and the Knights of Columbus 3734. An avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, Joe’s leisure time was spent watching sports on TV, and sometimes putting a little action on the game. He also loved making and sharing his lemon cello and homemade brandy with friends and family. Most of all Joe will be remembered for his kind and generous and competitive nature In addition to his parents and his wife, Cookie, Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Lillian Beagle. He will be remembered with love and admiration by his three sons, Joseph John “Joey” Veltri, Jr (Theresa); Michael Anthony Veltri (Lori) and John Anthony Veltri (Linda); his grandchildren, Robbie Joseph, Christopher Michael, Anthony Ryan, Luke (Tori) Marco, and Morgan Elizabeth Veltri; his brother, Marco Veltri and his sister, Angela Moldas Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street Weirton.
