markos apesos
On the afternoon of January 31, 2021, Markos “Mike” Apesos passed away at the age of 94. He was born in Mckeesport, Pennsylvania to Sideris and Argeta Maris Apesos. He was a loving husband to Ethel Georgiafandis Apesos (1927-2015), and father to two children he now leaves behind; daughter Georgene Horton of Follansbee and son, Steve Apesos of Massachusetts. In addition to his children, he is survived by daughter-in-law Joanne Clary Apesos and son-in-law Jay Horton; grandchildren Marc Apesos, Mary Apesos and her husband Scott Trabucco, and John Horton; and two great grandchildren Dylan and Anastasia Horton. He also leaves behind a brother-in-law John Georgiafandis of Shreveport, LA, sister-in-law Mary Maris of Warren, OH as well as many nieces and nephews. A highly-committed member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton since 1948, he was considered a pillar of the community. He worked on several of the church’s renovation projects, including the installation of its air conditioning and the modernization of the kitchen and social hall. He also was a founding member of the committee overseeing the annual Greek Festival. He spent many years at Weirton Steel as an electrician and general foreman, and as Scoutmaster of Cub Scout Pack 131 and Boy Scout Troop 131. He was always active in his church and other community activities, and was a mentor for an entire generation of young men from the Weirton community. His accolades for his years of dedication to the community are many; in 1980, he received the Silver Beaver, the highest honor for voluntary service to the Boy Scouts of America, in 2016, he received the St. Photios Award from the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Pittsburgh, and in 2017 he was inducted into the Weirton Hall of Fame. He was president of the 25-Year Club, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Honor Guard and held a variety of roles as part of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA). He was an avid WVU football fan and season ticket holder and was part of a local Weirton "Greek" contingent who attended many WVU home games and were known to host epic tailgate parties. You could find him on Cape Cod or upstate New York in his leisure time, fishing with his grandchildren or attending special events with his extended family. He is remembered as a humble, accepting, and generous man to everyone he knew. On a typical day one might find him getting his hands dirty in his iconic vegetable garden, landscaping around the house or fixing something as a favor for a friend. His warmth, commitment to family and loyalty to his friends will never be forgotten. He lived what he himself called “A Good Life, full of lots of love.” His death was preceded by his siblings; dear sister Dorothy Cucoros and brothers Thomas Apesos, Christopher Apesos, William Apesos and Theodore Maris. Funeral services will be held privately, but friends and family are welcome to join virtually at the following link at 11:00 a.m. EST on Thursday, February 4, 2021: allstswwv.org. The Rev. Fr. Frank A. Milanese will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton. Share tributes at www.grecohertnick.com
