Mary Kathryn Hughes, 98 of Weirton died Tuesday, May 8, 2001 at the Country Club Manor in Steubenville. She was born on August 24, 1902 in Monessen, PA, the daughter of the late Harry and Pauline Coughanour Thompson. She was also preceded in death by her husband Richard W. Hughes, Sr. on August 27, 1997, a son, Richard W. Hughes on February 23, 1996, a brother Harry A. Thompson, three sisters, Josephine Downer, Margaret Longacre and Edith Rinehart. Mary Kathryn retired from Hancock County School System as an elementary teacher. Mary Kathryn graduated with honors from Weir High School in 1921. She attended West Virginia University and Kent State University before graduating with honors from West Liberty State College in 1961. She was a player on the first girl’s basketball team at Weir High School. She was president of the Weir High Alumni association when there was less than 100 members. She was active in the Weirton Women’s Club. She was the longest living member of the Cove United Presbyterian Church joining the church in April of 1915.She was a member of the church choir. She was a soloist for the Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church and the Second Presbyterian Church of Steubenville, OH. She was the past president and organizer of the Hancock County Sheltered Workshop Parents Organization. She was Past Vice Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Life time member of the Marland Heights, PTA, Past President of the Hancock County Association of Retired School Employees, Past Board Member of the Hancock Brooke Mental Health, WMC Auxiliary with over 1000 volunteer hours, NRTA and AARP. Surviving include her nephew, James Y. Longacre of the Villages, FL, her nieces Mrs. Lefty (Kathryn) Heilman, Mrs. Barbara Cameron and Mrs. John (Esten) Jezerski all of Weirton, Mrs. Donald (Roberta) Taylor of Wellsburg and Lisa Atkins of London, England. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 PM until time of service at 2PM at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home 3219 Main Street Weirton, WV Interment will be in the Island Creek Cemetery, Knoxville, OH Memorial Contributions may be made to the Hancock County Sheltered Workshop or the Cove United Presbyterian Church, Weirton, WV.
