michael volosin
Michael “Mishu” Volosin, 87, of Weirton, WV, a loving father, Dedo, brother, and all-around fun- loving guy passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2022. His family was at his side. Michael along with his twin sister, Helen were born in Hollidays Cove, WV, on Wednesday October 3, 1934; the last two of 12 children born to Charles and Mary Fedor Volosin. Michael graduated from Weir High School in 1953. After high school, he and his good friend Sonny Riffee enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Mike had the honor of serving his country from 1957 to 1959. His childhood home, located on the 3200 block of Elm Street, allowed Michael and his brothers to walk to Williams Country Club to caddy for the golfers. The country club is where he and his brothers fell in love with the game of golf. Their earnings also helped support their large family. As a result, all the Volosin brothers became talented golfers, with his brother George becoming a PGA professional golfer. In 1960, Mike married Estelle Morris. Mike provided for his family by working as a turn foreman at Titanium Metals in Toronto, OH. In over 30 years of marriage, they were blessed with three beautiful daughters, Valerie, Kathy and Sue. In 2001, while volunteering at the Wednesday Chicken Blasts at the Serbian Picnic Grounds, Mishu met Judy Myers. Judy quickly became a member of the Volosin family. For two decades, Mishu and Judy were able to travel and enjoy each other’s company. Mishu was the happiest when he was with his family. He looked forward to the Annual Volosin Family Reunion, held annually up and down the East Coast since 1976. Year after year, Mishu and his brothers would compete on the local golf links for the bragging rights until the next reunion. Mike nourished his strong faith in God at the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church, where his family has been pillars of the church for over 100 years. He was also a member of Pleasant Valley Country Club, American Legion Post 10, Russian Men’s Club, Moose 688, Serbian Men’s Club, The Geritol Gang, The Over the Hill Gang and the Serb’s Golf groups. He was also an honorary member of The Savages. He would have been a member of the PGA if he had ever learned to putt! All who knew Mike will remember his “True Stories,” his happy- go- lucky nature, and his love for his family, especially his three babes, Valerie, Kathy and Sue. In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his infant brother and sister, his sister Ann Granger, and his brothers Charles, John, Pete, Andrew, Joe, and George Volosin. He will be remembered with love and admiration by his three daughters, Valerie (Michael) Comer, Kathy (Paul) Maragos, and Sue (John) Greco; his four granddaughters, Sophia and Sonja Maragos and Elle and Eliza Greco; his girlfriend, Judy Myers; and his two sisters, Mary Evans and Helen Orenzuk; many nieces and nephews. In closing, Mishu would like you to know, “You're my horse if you never win a race.” Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton, WV. Parastas Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church, Weirton, WV. Funeral Liturgy will begin at 11 a.m. Michael will be laid to rest at the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Cemetery in Weirton. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 10 Honor Guard and the United States Marine Corps. Contributions may be made to Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church Building Fund, 608 Colliers Way, Weirton, WV 26062. Share tributes and true stories at www.grecohertnick.com.
