norma battista
Norma Virginia Battista, 91, of Weirton, a selfless, loving, and generous mother, and grandmother, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2020. Norma was born in Hamilton, OH, on November 21, 1928. She was the eighth child born to Nicola and Antoniette (Savoia) Faccuito. She lived her childhood years in Steubenville, OH, and graduated from Steubenville Catholic Central in 1947. Norma lead a simple but full life. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the loves of her life. She loved cooking for her family, and when visiting, she always made sure your favorites were on the table. Holidays, weekends home from college, and out of town visits were always made special. If you wanted to talk sports, you could always include Coach Norm. She loved following high school, college, and professional sports, especially football. She always looked forward to springtime so that she could tend to her flowers all summer. She loved a good bargain and doing laundry. There was never a stain she couldn’t get out, and she never lost a sock! Cooking for her family, and sharing a meal around her table was her greatest enjoyment. If you were around her, you knew you were loved. In addition to her parents, Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Frank T. Battista, on July 3, 2008, her five brothers, James, Tony, Primo, Eugene, and Danny Faccuito; and her two sisters, Frances DiBiase and Helen Fornsaglio. She will be remembered with love and admiration by her son, Thomas (Donna) Battista, her daughters, Marie (James) Fazalare, Francine (John) Crow and Lisa (Steve) Petrovich; her ten grandchildren, Amy Miller, Joseph (Krysta) Fazalare, Frank (Celia), Adam (Danielle), and Tommie Battista, Jack, and Leah Crow, and Stephen, Nicholas and Madalyn Petrovich; 11 great-grandchildren; and sister in law, Josie Newton. Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated 1:30 PM Saturday at Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church in Weirton. Private Entombment will follow at Saint Paul’s Cemetery Mausoleum. For her love of feeding others, it would make Norma very happy for contributions be made in her memory to the Feed For Success at Weirton Elementary School or to the Community Bread Basket, Inc. 3. Marie, Tommy, Fran, Lisa and all the Grands…I have so many memories of your mama and grandmother, whose spirit was full of grace, gentleness, love, and warmth. My first vivid one was when I snuck back into Morgan Hall (after a late night party) so I could join my mom (and Mrs. Battista) who were spending the night there after Song Fest. I got caught and had to appear before a disciplinary board. She was incredulous that I got in trouble for sneaking into instead of out of the dorm–and had done so to spend time with my mom. “Oh, my!” she often proclaimed. Then at Marie’s wedding, I witnessed the incredible love the Battista family has for each other and the attention to detail that Mrs. B inspired in fashion, decor, and food. Eventually, as I got to know her better, Mrs. Battista became Normie, who was the good sport at our quad family Christmas gatherings where her homemade rolls were everyone’s favorite. How I miss the walks past her house on Pleasantview with my walking pal Marie and seeing Normie wave to us from her porch as she watered her beautiful flowers. Normie came to our home in Hedgesville only once, and I treasure the memory. As soon as she walked in, she proclaimed, “No wonder you always want people to come and visit you!” She couldn’t believe how secluded we were. Of course, she brought pizzelles for us. She fed everyone she loved. The last time Greg and I saw her was at Serra Manor, she was as beautiful and graceful as always–her smile wide, her complexion smooth as silk, her eyes glistening. It was a short visit to drop off a few Martinsburg peaches– she savored fresh fruit. The fruit of her life’s work is evident in four amazing children, who have shared their love and talents with so many others. Many memories of your mom and your family help me to smile, and I imagine all of you together recalling memories that make you laugh and smile as well. A life well lived–for sure. Extending our love and sympathy from all the Asfours and Stumps. We love you!
