Virgil H. Smaltz
August 18, 1918 ~ October 16, 2006
Virgil H. Smaltz, 88, of Weirton WV passed away Monday October 16, 2006 at Peterson Hospital and Geriatric Center in Wheeling, WV. He was born August 18, 1918 in Weirton, the son of the late Chester and Katherine House Smaltz. A nephew, Dr. John Harman, whom he raised; brothers Harold and Donald Smaltz and sisters Gaynel Spear and Katherine Smaltz also preceded him in death.
Virgil retired from the Weirton Steel Company with 41 years of service in the Fuel Department as a systems operator. He served his country as 1st Lieutenant flying 33 missions over Japan as a B29 Bombardier during WWII in the US Air Force. He was a member of the VFW, WSX 25-Year Club, the Three Score Seniors and AARP.
Virgil is survived by his wife Louese H. Harman Smaltz, whom he married April 27, 1946; son Dr. Virgil William Smaltz and his wife Frances and their daughter Lauren Smaltz of Charleston, WV; grandchildren Jason Smaltz and his wife Yolanda, who is stationed in England, Kristen Smaltz and their mother Nancy Smaltz of Morgantown, WV.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St, Weirton, WV where services will be conducted 11:00AM Thursday with Reverend Father Tom Schiffer officiating. Entombment will in St. Paul Cemetery Mausoleum with Military services conducted by the American Legion Post 10 and the Weirton Honor Guard.
