Wayne Franklin Cline, 79, of Weirton, was taken into God’s hands on Thursday, March 17, 2004. He was born May 7, 1924 in Wellsville, Ohio, son of the late Ira P. and Martha Chambers Cline. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son Douglas; brothers Robert, Ira Jr. and Walter Cline; stepmother Mildred Channing Cline; and Blain and Paul from his extended Channing family. Wayne graduated in the Weir High School Class of 42 and was a graduate of West Virginia University. He was a veteran of World War II having served his country in the US Navy. Wayne retired from Weirton Steel where he worked as a pipe fitter in the Tin Mill and was a member of the WSX 25-Year Club. He was a member of the Cove Presbyterian Church, served as a Deacon, Ruling Elder, a member of the Men’s Bible Class and served on many Church Committees. He served as a Boy Scout Master for 29 years and also served on the Troop Committee of Troop 334. He received the Silver Beaver Award for his dedication to the Scouting Program. He was a past 4-H Leader, an All-Star and supported the programs of the WVU Extension Service. He served as Chairman of the Hancock County Republican Committee, helping many candidates with county elections. Wayne was a member of the AARP and served as RSVP tax preparation aid. He was a member of the West Virginia Alumni Association and loved his Mountaineers. Wayne was an avid gardener and enjoyed life with his family and his farming. He touched the lives of many children and adults throughout his involvement in community services. Wayne’s goodness and generosity will be sadly missed by all those who loved him. He is survived by his wife Eleanor of Weirton; sons David and his wife Terri of Weirton, and Michael and his wife Debbie of Ghent, WV; daughter Joyce Hagerty and her husband Gary of Friendly, WV; daughter-in-law Linda Bonovich Cline of Colliers; 10 loving grandchildren, Benjamin, Brittany and Brenna Hagerty; Preston and Sarah Cline; Brandon and Morgan Cline; Kayla, Staci and Molly Cline; sister Harriet Goble and her husband Corban of Bowling Green, KY; sister-in-law Loretta Cline of Port Richey, FL; and his extended Channing family, Darold Channing, June Bradley, Virginia Warnock, Kathryn Michell, Wayne Channing and James Channing. Friends will be received Thursday from 7:00-9:00PM and Friday from 2:00-4:00PM and 7:00–9:00PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. Additional visitation will be held Saturday 10 AM until time of Funeral services at 11:00 AM at the Cove Presbyterian Church. Reverend Michael Lenno will preside. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens where military services will be conducted by the Weirton V.F.W. Post 2716 Firing Squad, the Evert Maki American Legion Post 10 Honor Guard and the Tri-State Marine Corps. For me Wayne was a powerful influence in my life and as I sit down to write this the memories of my time with him are flooding into my mind.
