william paolisso, jr.
William Edward Paolisso Jr., 89, of Doylestown, PA, formerly Weirton, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Doylestown Hospital. Born December 6, 1927 in Weirton, he was the son of the late William "Shoemaker" and Angela (Marino) Paolisso. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife Margaret "Peggy" Paolisso; brother Paul Paolisso; sisters Lucille Paolisso Vince and Louise Paolisso DiMaria. Bill worked for Weirton Steel in plant protection. He was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church. He was a three-sport athlete at Weir High (football, basketball and baseball) and a member of the OVAC Hall of Fame. He played professional baseball for the St Louis Cardinals organization in the 50's, but was most well known, in the Tri State area, for officiating football and basketball for over 50 years. He also served 2 years in the U. S. Army. He is survived by his son William "Billy" Paolisso III of Montebello, CA; daughter Maria (John) Novey of Bucks County Pennsylvania ; grandchildren Michael and Carolyn Novey; sister Genevieve Paolisso Bellissimo of Cincinnati Ohio and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Saturday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weirton. Reverend Father Larry Dorsch will officiate.   3. Bill and family, my deepest condolences on the lost of your father. Your dad and I became very good friends over the last couple of years. He was extremely elated after being inducted to the OVAC hall of fame as was I it was quite a honor for him. After all not too many referees ever got honored. (smile) He and I talked, he was always asking me about Weirton – his home. He was a good friend, which was a blessing.

  6. Maria, Billy and all of the Paolisso family, I am sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Paolisso. I can still remember Mr. Paolisso refereeing Weir High, football games, diving into a pile of players, pulling us apart and saying “great play, keep it clean, now get back in the huddle and try to do it again.” He was having as much fun as us players. Godspeed to all.

Your dad was always good to us kids on Brookline Drive, when he got tickets to the Pirates he would always take some of the kids from Brookline to the games. You never know how much the Paolisso family meant to me growing up on Brookline Drive they were a second family to me with so much love they gave me when I thought nobody care about me. . Starting with June and Paul, Lucille (Nana) and Louie Vince and the find people from Cincinnati. And Bill and Beggy. We grew up in the best place in Weirton on Brookline Drive with that playground.   13. My condolences to the Paolisso family. I had the pleasure of being a co worker of Bill’s at Doylestown Countey Club and developed a friendship with Bill. Bill always had a smile and was always ready for a good conversation and a free lunch:) We’ll all miss him.

I had the good fortune of having him as a referee on the field or court and pointing out things to me that I never saw; always trying to make us better athletes.
